PLEASE NOTE THAT AN AUCTION PREMIUM WILL BE CHARGED, ON TOP OF THE HAMMER PRICE, OF 5% (+VAT IN UK AND EUROPE). FROM 16TH JAN'23 THIS APPLIES TO ALL AUCTIONS ON THE MARKET, AND FEES ARE MIN €720 / MAX €7,200.

The Silver Spur was a longer-wheelbase version of the Silver Spirit, the first model in Rolls-Royce’s SZ series, and was in production from 1981 to 1999.

Along with the other models in the SZ series, the Silver Spur was one of the last Crewe-built Rolls-Royces with truly British DNA running through it. The next generations of the ‘The World’s Best Car’ would be built by BMW in a new facility at Goodwood, England.

It featured Rolls-Royce’s familiar four-door monocoque bodyshell, a smooth and powerful 6750cc V8 engine allied to four-speed automatic transmission, all-round independent suspension, adaptive ride control, power steering and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS.

It was the first Rolls-Royce to feature a retractable Spirit of Ecstasy mascot.

The ultra-rare Rolls-Royce touring limousines such as the one we have here were built to a Robert Jankel design in conjunction with coach builder Mulliner Park Ward, of London.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery. In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carseurope.net.

VIN: SCAZL0008ECX08248.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this 1986 LHD auto Rolls-Royce Silver Spur Limousine by Robert Jankel comes with no history or service records beyond whatever is shown in the documents section.

It has 25,445 kms on its odometer.

We believe it was exported new to Japan and bought for the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles in 2012.

The car doesn’t start or run at present (but it does take power to the dashboard), so our appraisal of it is entirely based on its cosmetic appearance.

Exterior

First things first – this car is absolutely enormous. Viewed from the side it occupies most of the visible horizon.

The car presents fairly well from a distance (which is the only range that allows you to see all of it at once) but get a little closer and some issues become apparent.

Principal among them is the condition of the roof, where there is bubbling in evidence pretty much everywhere.

The bodywork is largely devoid of any dents or creases worth mentioning and the black paintwork, too, is broadly decent – provided you ignore the roof, of course.

The chromework and wheels are generally good, as is the badging, trim and most exterior fixtures and fittings.

There are some scuffs and scrapes on the front door and centre section on the passenger side and some cracks and splits in the paint on the front wing on the same side.

There are some scuffs on the centre section on the driver’s side.

Interior

It’s a similar story on the inside: good in parts, less so in others.

In the front section ahead of the central glass division (the glass is either in its recess or missing at present - we’re not sure which) the dashboard is broken and coming away from the fascia.

The trim around the central division is loose and hanging down.

The green carpets and mats in the front cabin are shabby but serviceable.

The trim around both ‘A’ pillars is coming away.

The light grey leather upholstery is torn on the front passenger seat but fine on the driver’s side.

The most striking aspect of the rear cabin is the layout.

Two rear-facing seats opposite two forward-facing seats, with all sorts of entertainment consoles and storage units between them.

It’s really quite extraordinary.

The forward-facing seats have stains and cracks on the driver’s side and creases, cracks and a rip on the passenger side.

The black headlining looks OK.

The panel behind the rear centre armrest has come unattached.

The boot is scruffy but otherwise OK.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t started or driven the car.

Mechanical

The clean, dry engine and engine bay look fine and the undersides of the car appear to have plenty of structural integrity.

History

This car comes with no history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

No documents shown in the gallery in any way constitute any kind of licensing or registration certification unless otherwise stated.

Summary

Despite clearly needing some attention here and there, this exceptionally rare and quite remarkable vehicle could no doubt be restored and put to work as a wedding or events car like no other - provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €20,000 - €30,000 plus tax, auction premium & €500 bond fee.
