1970 Triumph TR6

The vendor purchased this TR6 back in July 2002 from Lenham Sports Cars in Kent when it had 61,360 on clock and has only ticked up the best part of 35,000 miles over the last 20 or so years. The reason for the car’s modest mileage is because it was stored 'off road’ in the then-owner’s car showroom between 1978 and 1997.

Back in 1997 this car benefited from a full professional nut and bolt rebuild. The bodywork was done by Faversham Classic Restoration where it was resprayed to its original Jasmine yellow. The metal trims were fitted over welds on the rear boot area and Triumph metal trims were added to the door sills. The rear black back plate was not fitted on the rebuild as preference. The car also gained a new hood and leather faced seats. It’s worth highlighting that all of the works have been noted by the TR Register.

This is a special motor that has gained a fair bit of attention from publications and fans over the years. It came runner up in a TR Register Malvern weekend in a near concours competition, back in 2004. It was also featured in an article in Triumph World magazine in July 2004 – a copy of the magazine is being sold with the vehicle.

The exterior of the TR6 is characterised by its sleek, aerodynamic lines, stylish chrome accents, and timeless good looks. The car is fitted with wire wheels which enhances its classic appeal. The black convertible top looks to be in sound condition and is a true testament to the care and attention that this car has received over the years. This motor has recently undergone a professional polish all over and underneath. The vendor emphasises the beauty of this example and said, as far as panel gaps are concerned: “I am going to be bold here and say you will not see a finer car regarding those! Many admirers of the car over the years have pointed that out to me”.

Inside the cabin, the TR6 is well-appointed, with comfortable bucket seats, a Moto Lita steering wheel (though the original is in boot), and an array of period gauges. The luxurious black leather seats are beautifully crafted, featuring a subtle stitch pattern that adds texture and depth. With an understated sophistication, the interior is equipped with polished wooden accents, adding a warm and inviting touch to the already stunning design. The dashboard, carpets and door cards look to be in sound condition throughout and it comes with a spare wheel under the boot floor. In addition new tacho/reb counter has been fitted last month as well as a new Bosch battery.

Under the hood, the TR6 is powered by a smooth and responsive 2.5-liter inline-six engine, which provides plenty of power and torque for an exhilarating driving experience. The car is equipped with a four-speed manual transmission, allowing the driver to fully engage with the road and take control of the driving experience. The engine bay appears to be clean and everything looks to be its right and proper place. It’s encouraging to see there does not seem to be any evidence of leakage.

Last year, the car had a new clutch fitted and the flywheel was completely refaced. This gave the chance for the clutch mechanism and gearbox to be stripped, cleaned and rebuilt using all listed parts from TR Revington. It also had the front wheel bearings replaced, a reconditioned rear hub and radiator fitted, along with a new alternator. All this work totals just shy of £3000. The underside is equally clean and well presented.

This lovely TR6 has had 4 owners from new. It comes with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, confirming engine number: CP 50693-H and its date of build of 28th January 1970. This shows the car was dispatched to Portsmouth Garages Portsmouth on 4th Feb 1970. This motor also comes with a Recon Tacho gauge that is not fitted.

This motor has been much loved and benefited from a fair bit of work over the years. In 2015, it had a new fuel pump assembly installed and a new metering unit fitted. In 2017, it had a master Bosch fuel pump and new diaphragm PRV valve installed. In 2018 the car had a complete PI check and relay fitted to the fuel pump, costing just shy of £2000. It had a new batter installed three years ago and, in 2020, it underwent a full service, where it benefited from new plugs, new condenser points and a compression test.

This Triumph TR6 is a truly exceptional example of a classic British sports car. Its combination of style, performance, and handling make it a true driver's car, and its timeless good looks ensure that it will always be a sought-after collector's item. As such, we think a prospective buyer will have to part with somewhere between £22,000 and £28,000 to make this car their own.
