Background

The Triumph Stag was conceived as a luxury sports car designed to compete with such luminaries as the Mercedes-Benz SL. All Stags were convertible coupes but, having four seats, they were more usable than most.

Taking the roof off a car has a tendency to compromise structural rigidity and as the Stag was destined to compete in the American market, it had to meet their stringent rollover standards. The Stag was therefore fitted with its distinctive B-pillar roll bar hoop, connected to the windscreen.

A removable hard top was a popular option, so much so that it became a standard fitment on later cars.

Styled by Giovanni Michelotti, the Stag still has the ability to turn heads today and is as undoubtedly appealing as ever.

Chassis No: LD10351LO.

Odometer: 41,215 kms.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this LHD 1972 3.0 litre V8 Triumph Stag with a manual overdrive gearbox is a fine example of a car whose resurgent popularity is not yet matched by correspondingly high prices.

We know that it entered the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2015.

And we know that prior to that it was living in Luxembourg for many years.

According to a piece of paper with the car, the seats are not original.

And that’s all we know.

Exterior

Presented in black with a grey hardtop, the car’s paintwork is really fairly good overall.

The wheels are good all round and most of the chrome work is in very decent condition.

The chrome been behind the front number plate has blackened.

The badging and lights are good, but some of the trim looks rather tired.

The bodywork is largely free of any idents, bumps or creases, although there is a slight indentation in the rear bumper on the driver’s side.

There are several scratches on the bonnet and a few on and around the boot, where there are also some small instances of bubbling.

There is some rust visible in a couple of the wheel arches.

The paint inside the recessed exterior door handles has rubbed away.

The passenger door doesn’t seem to close completely flush with the bodywork.

Interior

The interior looks to have survived very well overall, and there’s really very little to complain about.

The upholstery is undamaged and uncreased, both front and back.

The carpets and mats are good, as are the door cards, and although the headlining would benefit from being cleaned, it’s not ripped or baggy anywhere that we can see.

The fabric running along the base of the rear screen has frayed and discoloured in places.

The wood veneers on the dashboard look very good, and the steering wheel, gear lever and instruments all seem to be in first-class condition.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start the vehicle.

The boot is in decent condition. Lifting up the mats here or elsewhere reveals some rust dust but nothing that seems overly concerning.

Mechanical

There is some rust dust in evidence underneath but everything looks to have a decent amount of structural integrity from what we can see.

Everything in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and seems to be clean and dry.

History

The car doesn’t come with any history or service record.

Any paperwork we have is photographed and displayed in the photo gallery. We do not have anything else.

Summary

Apart from some cosmetic issues, we’d say that this Triumph Stag seems to us to be in far better than average condition. We think it could well reward its next owner’s passion and care with years of classic motoring pleasure.

Provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals are as good as the rest of the car.
