The MR2 is Japan's first rear mid-engined production car that is as enjoyable to drive, as it is economical with fuel. Manufactured in Japan and marketed globally from 1984 until 2007, the MR2 had a lifespan over three generations: W10 (1984–1989), W20 (1989–1999) and W30 (2000–2007). Conceived as small, economical and sporty, the MR2 is a true iconic sports car with a unique combination of style, performance, and reliability that has stood the test of time. Powered by a mid-mounted, naturally aspirated 2.0liter, four-cylinder engine, it produces a healthy 154 BHP. Combine that with its lightweight design and balanced chassis, this motor provides a thrilling driving experience that is both responsive and engaging.

Overview

This stunning Toyota MR2 2.0 GTi is finished in diamond white with a contrasting black and blue interior. The condition of this vehicle belies its age and mileage - it is in a truly remarkable state. This car comes in its original factory specification, retaining its manufacturer stickers. It comes with 21 service entries, many of which come from a Toyota Main Dealer and more recently it has been looked after by Toyota specialists, Toyotek. It's worth mentioning that this car is supplied with its original book pack, a complete spare wheel and the private number plate is also included.

The mid-engine placement and rear wheel drive delivers an exciting ride coupled with famed Japanese reliability, making it a fantastic daily sports car. The vendor has used it to drive from the Midlands to Manchester every other week, which is about 160-mile round trip, with no issues. The owner commented: “It’s also pretty good on fuel, which is quite surprising to be honest with you”. All in all, he’s a reluctant seller, having bought this motor only four months ago. In his words: “If I had somewhere to put it, I’d keep hold of it because it’s in that nice of a condition”.

Exterior

The 1991 Toyota MR2 features a sleek and aerodynamic exterior design that is both stylish and functional. It has a low and wide stance, with a sloping hood and angular lines that create a sporty and aggressive look. The pop-up headlights - a signature feature of the MR2 - are integrated into the sleek front fascia, adding to the vehicle's distinctive appearance.

The MR2's exterior is designed with attention to detail, with carefully crafted lines and curves that create a smooth and aerodynamic profile. The car's body is lightweight, helping to improve performance and handling. There is no evidence of rust or corrosion that we could see, and the paintwork looks solid throughout.

Interior

The cabin is designed to offer a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience and features a simple and intuitive dashboard with clear and easy-to-read gauges, as well as a range of convenient features and controls within reach of the driver. The seats are comfortable and supportive, offering excellent comfort for longer journeys, and the interior is fairly spacious. The previous keeper had all the seats reupholstered a few years ago when the car was recommissioned. The blue and black leather interior is in good condition and it comes with an additional feature of a pop-up sunroof.

The audio system is well-integrated and the vehicle also comes with air conditioning and power windows. Whether you're taking a weekend road trip or simply cruising around town, this classic sports car's interior provides an engaging driving experience.

Mechanical

The mid-mounted four-cylinder engine and the rear-located transmission provide a balanced weight distribution that helps to improve handling and stability. Designed for maximum performance and efficiency, the high-revving design allows it to rev quickly and smoothly. It features an electronic fuel injection system that ensures an efficient and reliable operation, and a five-speed manual transmission that provides precise and engaging gear changes.

Overall, the engine in the 1991 Toyota MR2 is an essential part of the vehicle's unique and exciting driving experience, delivering thrilling performance and handling that have made this classic sports car a favourite among enthusiasts and collectors alike.

In the vendor’s words: “It’s like driving a go-kart”. Under the bonnet, in the engine bay and in the boot appear to show no sign of corrosion, which is uncommon for an MR2 of this era. The interior is relatively unmarked with recent touch ups given to the gearstick and gaiter. On the road this 1992 Toyota MR2 is said to drive very well, with no noticeable knocks, bangs or squeaks. The steering is direct and provides plenty of fun flicking through the gears on the B roads.

One of the defining features of the MR2's underside is its mid-engine layout, which places the engine behind the driver and between the rear wheels. This configuration gives the car a lower centre of gravity, which improves handling and stability. The chassis is notable for its use of lightweight materials, such as aluminium and fibreglass to reduce weight and increase performance. The suspension is comprised of MacPherson struts up front and a rear beam axle, offering a comfortable and confident ride. This car sits on 15-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in high-performance tires for maximum grip and handling.

History

As mentioned above, this car comes in its original, factory state. In the words of the vendor: “I’ve not had to do anything to it apart from wash it”. It comes with a full-service history, though it was off the road for three years before the previous owner recommissioned it. At this point the car benefited from a full service and new cam belts. The vendor reiterated several times: “It’s in excellent condition and if I didn’t have to sell it, I wouldn’t”.

This particular 1991 Toyota MR2 is in excellent condition. The vehicle has been well-maintained, making it an excellent investment opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Whether you're looking for a fun weekend ride or a valuable addition to your collection, this MR2 is sure to impress.
