Background

Swedish cars have always been a reflection of both its people (solid and uber dependable) and its climate (cool, to the point of freezing). Alas Saab may be no more, but even today its aeronautically influenced output retains a sparkling allure – none more so, than it’s funky 900. Released in 1978 its styling was achingly eye-catching and yet surprisingly classless, while underneath sat the well proven mechanicals of its 99 predecessor – only now on a 2-inch longer wheelbase. Of course that meant it came in both N/A and Turbocharged (of which the company was a mass-market pioneer) forms; the 100bhp naturally aspirated car was a performer, but the latter 145bhp Turbo was a sparkling hoot of a beast with a mid-range punch Anders Eklund would have been proud of. Discerning punters could have a Convertible, Saloon or Hatchback and in all forms Saab shifted a mighty 1,283,958 units. Production continued until 1993 (yes, 1993!), and such was the superlative mix of ingredients put into the pot that it barely needed a change in that time (save for the introduction of a 16-valve engine - good for 175bhp in the Turbo - in 1984). Today, a 900 retains a timeless elegance. Go for a Turbo and you’ll have performance on tap that’ll still give many a modern machine a run for its money. Factor in bulletproof mechanicals (starship mileages aren’t rare, they’re common place) and a build quality par excellence, and they make one very smart choice of classic car.

Overview

This desirable three door 900S Turbo Aero came to be in its current owner's garage almost by accident. In an all too typical turn of events, he took his classic car in to a classic garage for a quick repair job which quickly escalated in multi year bare metal resto, and in the meantime he wanted to keep his retro riding going so looked for a good usable classic he could just get into and enjoy.

This 900 was the perfect candidate, not just because of SAAB’s rock solid reputation but also because the service history with this car is outstanding. Registered new by the SAAB Piccadilly Delivery Centre on the 8th of October 1990, it was serviced annually by SAAB City in London, until 2001, the SAAB Fulham and the final stamp on the last page of the service book is from Swedish Car Centre in December 2006 at 73,479 miles.

Over the last five years the previous owner had spent a great deal on not just servicing but as the car was approaching 30 years old age and mileage related items.

Shortly after taking ownership of the 900 in 2021 he had his mechanic go through it and rectify a number of issues, spending over £1600 making it close to perfect.

Now his original classic has been completed sadly the SAAB has go to make room for that car.

As a wheel chair user the car has been fitted with clamp on hand controls which will be removed and won't leave any marks on the car.

Exterior

The 900 is the classic combination of three door, black and factory Aero kit with the three spoke alloys. The bodywork is excellent with no blemishes in the panels, which have nice even gaps and door shuts. The paint is also very good with a deep mirror like gloss and very few stone chips or marks around the car.

The large safety bumpers do have scratches on the corners, but are otherwise good, as is the rubber boot spoiler. The chrome grill, badges and lamps are all very good, and the headlamps even have the most wonderful accessory - lamp wipers.

The 15” alloy wheels are good, with only a few marks and the tyres have good tread, although as mentioned in the MOT, one does look old.

Interior

Thanks to doors that almost wrap around the sill, there is barely any door step so access is easy.

Fitted with velour seats from new, these have worn well. The fabric looks good and has little stretching or wear. There is a small hole worn at the base of the drivers bolster but is otherwise very good.

A nice three spoke leather steering wheel is fitted which is in good condition, and the a new Blaupunkt Bremen DAB radio has been fitted. The dash top has a couple of cracks and the chrome trim around the controls binnacle has come loose but otherwise the dash is very good.

The door cards have matching velour and are in great shape and the carpets are good with only a small number of marks and a little wear under the drivers heal.

The headlining is very good and the electric sunroof works as it should.

Mechanical

The engine bay is very clean and tidy and well packed, the 16V turbo charged engine heavily canted over to fit under the low bonnet. It fires up instantly and idles well, and selects drive and reverse smoothy, the owner tells us it drives well and there are no signs of leakage from anywhere.

History

This car has been very well cared for with anything it has needed being dealt with, and sheaf of receipts to go with it.

In 2021 £500 was spent on hydraulic hoses for the gearbox oil cooler, and nearly £1700 on and exhaust, rear calipers, the passenger window motor and rebushing the alternator.

Previously, in 2019 it had front shocks and drop links, a steering column bearing and bushes among other items.

Summary

This is a fabulous example of a 900 Turbo, ticking all the boxes in the looks department, and has been fastidiously maintained.

Our estimate for this car is £8,000 - £12,000.
