Background

The Silver Wraith was the first post-war Rolls Royce. It was made from 1946 to 1958. It was meant to fill the role as Rolls Royce’s smaller car, the size being chosen to stay up to date with the mood of post-war trends. Improvements over the 1939 Wraith were as follows: chromium-plated cylinder bores, a more rigid chassis frame, independent front suspension, a synchromesh gearbox, and centralized chassis lubrication.

Overview

The Silver Wraith had undergone several upgrades during its production life. The engine is a 280 cu in straight-six mated to the 4-speed manual with synchromesh. The chassis to these Silver Wraiths differ heavily from the pre-war Wraiths and are notably more rigid. Servo assisted drum brakes were used at both ends of the Silver Wraith, hydraulically operated at the front, and mechanically operated at the rear. This specific Rolls Royce Silver Wraith is marked as having been coach built by the good people over at Mulliner Park Ward.

Exterior

The exterior of this Silver Wraith has been completed in a wonderful two-tone, brown and cream paint job. It features classic Rolls Royce pinstriping down each side of the vehicle, and the paint is in fair condition, but it is not without its fair share of marks. The paint chips in several panel gaps, and there is a sizable scrape at the bottom of the driver’s door. There is some bubbling on the driver’s rear quarter panel, and between the doors on the passenger side. The chrome around the car is straight and there are no wrinkles to be seen, although some polish would be highly beneficial. The white wall tires are in good shape, although they would benefit from an intense scrubbing. One unique feature on this car is the yellow fog lights. Many Silver Wraiths have no fog lights at all, and those that do are generally always clear glass.

Interior

This Silver Wraith’s interior is finished in tan leather and complemented by cream carpets. The front seats are in fantastic condition. The leather on the passenger seat appears to be slightly more wrinkled than the driver’s seat. Both show very little signs of usage let alone any wear and tear. There are three rows of seating in this vehicle, making it a long wheelbase version of the Silver Wraith. The middle two seats look fair. They do not appear to be as immaculate as the front seats, but there are no holes or tears to be seen. The rear bench looks to be in great shape, only minorly creased in some areas. The carpets are in excellent condition in the rear of the car, but the carpets underneath the driver and passenger would definitely benefit from a deep cleaning. The wooden dashboard, dash pad, and trim around the inside are clean and free of chips, and the tan leather door panels look great. The pouch on the driver’s side door panel looks slightly stretched, but it’s nothing major.

Mechanical

Based on this vehicle’s condition in storage, it is safe to assume there is no major damage underneath the car. However, based on the vehicle’s age, it might also be safe to assume there is some degree of surface corrosion present as well.

History

In the late 70s, the car was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before being transferred to a new owner located in Narberth, PA. Where it went after that is a mystery, but we do know that the seller acquired this vehicle around November of 2012.

Summary

This Silver Wraith is excellent. Two tone paint jobs on these vehicles really make them stand out from the crowd and this specific example takes everything one step further thanks to the Mulliner Park Ward coach building. Yellow fog lights are seldom seen on these vehicles and the rotating middle row seats also make car highly unique. The car is still as gentlemanly as any other Rolls, but this one also has a more athletic aura to it. This is a wonderful opportunity to become the owner of a very unique, properly British, vintage luxury car.

The Market by Bonhams is excited to offer this Silver Wraith for online auction with no reserve and an estimate between $35,000 and $50,000.
