Background

A PREMIUM WILL BE CHARGED OF 5% + VAT ON THE HAMMER PRICE (IN UK AND EUROPE ONLY) MIN €720 / MAX €7,200.

The Silver Spur was a longer-wheelbase version of the Silver Spirit, the first model in Rolls-Royce’s SZ series, and was in production from 1981 to 1999.

Along with the other models in the SZ series, the Silver Spur was one of the last Crewe-built Rolls-Royces with truly British DNA running through it. The next generations of the ‘The World’s Best Car’ would be built by BMW in a new facility at Goodwood, England.

It featured Rolls-Royce’s familiar four-door monocoque bodyshell, a smooth and powerful 6750cc V8 engine allied to four-speed automatic transmission, all-round independent suspension, adaptive ride control, power steering and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS.

It was the first Rolls-Royce to feature a retractable Spirit of Ecstasy mascot.

The ultra-rare, coach-built Rolls-Royce limousine we have here appears to have been built to a Robert Jankel design.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery. In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, [email protected].

VIN: SCAZN0006DCX08063.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this 1989 LHD auto Rolls-Royce Silver Spur Limousine comes with no history or service records beyond whatever is shown in the documents section.

It has 19,287 kms on its odometer.

We believe it may have been exported new to Japan and was bought for the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles in 2015.

The car doesn’t start or run at present, so our appraisal of it is entirely based on its cosmetic appearance.

Exterior

This black limousine has a 36-inch (approx. 91.5 cm) stretch section in the middle and is, by any measure, enormous.

The car presents fairly well from a distance (which is the only range that allows you to see all of it at once) but get a little closer and some relatively minor issues become apparent.

There are some paint chips on the rear bumper and on the driver’s side flank in various places.

The front bumper has patches of missing paint.

The front passenger-side light cluster is missing its lights and lenses.

The car’s blacked-out windows and bespoke ‘VIP’ and ‘1000” badging suggest it may have been used as an events car at some point in its life.

There is some bubbling under the vinyl roof at the rear on the passenger side.

The chrome work and wheels are generally good, as is the badging, trim and most exterior fixtures and fittings, including the gold Spirit of Ecstasy mascot.

There is a bit of rough, blistered paint on the boot lid on the passenger side.

The rubber trim around the windows and doors is perished in various places.

Interior

The beige leather seats in the front cabin are in good order, although the base of the driver’s seat is loose and needs to be re-attached.

The door cards, headlining and most of the wood veneers are also broadly good, with the exception of the veneers on the driver’s door capping, which are cracked.

The white ‘fur’ over-rugs need to be introduced to some powerful cleaning products.

Behind the central glass dividing screen, the rear cabin (much like its counterpart in the front) is bristling with all manner of electronic gadgetry and gizmos – all dating from the 1980s.

Again, the seats, door cards, headlining and wood veneers are all pretty good.

The carpets, however, are seriously moth-eaten.

The white ‘fur’ over rugs in the rear are in the same state as their counterparts at the front.

The most striking aspect of the rear cabin is the layout.

Two rear-facing seats opposite two forward-facing seats, with all sorts of entertainment consoles and storage units between them.

It’s really rather unusual.

The carpets in the boot are decidedly moth eaten.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t started or driven the car.

Mechanical

The clean, dry engine and engine bay look fine and the undersides of the car appear to have a decent amount of structural integrity.

History

This car comes with no history or service records. The paperwork you see in the photo gallery is a photocopy (the original is lost).

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

No documents shown in the gallery in any way constitute any kind of licensing or registration certification unless otherwise stated.

Summary

Despite needing some attention here and there, this exceptionally rare and quite remarkable vehicle could no doubt be restored and put to work as a very distinctive (and distinguished) wedding or events car - provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €20,000-€30,000.
