Background

The Silver Spur was a longer-wheelbase version of the Silver Spirit, the first model in Rolls-Royce’s SZ series, and was in production from 1981 to 1999.

Along with the other models in the SZ series, the Silver Spur was one of the last Crewe-built Rolls-Royces with truly British DNA running through it. The next generations of the ‘The World’s Best Car’ would be built by BMW in a new facility at Goodwood, England.

It featured Rolls-Royce’s familiar four-door monocoque bodyshell, a smooth and powerful 6750cc V8 engine allied to four-speed automatic transmission, all-round independent suspension, adaptive ride control, power steering and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS.

It was the first Rolls-Royce to feature a retractable Spirit of Ecstasy mascot.

The Rolls-Royce Silver Spur III was manufactured between 1994 and 1996.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax on top of the winning bid price (9%). Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If the winning bidder exports it to their country then they will only pay taxes in that country (you will not pay tax twice).

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and the documented history available is limited to that displayed in our photography section.

We have not tried to start or drive the car, and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released to the buyer or transporter immediately after the sale. For all enquiries relating to Customs, please contact CARS Europe BV.

Purchases will only be released once cleared funds are received. All vehicles must be collected after the payment of funds. All storage charges must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation.

Storage charges payment must be arranged with the storage company. Collection is strictly by appointment only.

Please send a booking email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection. Collection either by buyer or third party is only possible for vehicles within customs bond if applicable import taxes paid are paid to import into country of bonded storage location.

As soon as The Market by Bonhams receives your payment, our accounts service will inform the manager of the storage facility where your car(s) is stored: a release note will be sent to them.

CARS Europe BV will contact you just after the sale to confirm onward transport requirements. Direct contact at CARS for enquiries is as follows; Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, [email protected].

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this LHD auto 1994 car comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this Silver Spur III is a low kilometres example in decent overall condition, although there are some relatively minor issues to contend with.

We know that it entered the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2013.

Exterior

The blue paintwork is in reasonable overall condition and mostly has plenty of shine and lustre to it.

The bodywork is free of any significant dents, bumps or creases that we can see.

The panel gaps and shut lines are consistent.

The chrome work is mostly good, as are the lights, badging and trim.

There is significant bubbling around the Silver Spur badge on the boot lid. We think there may be some bubbling just starting beneath the vinyl roof near the rear window.

There are a few light scratches on the wings, bonnet and wheel arches, plus some stone chips around the front grille.

There are some scuffs on the passenger-side front door and some splits to the paint and scuffing in the sill by the driver’s-side front wheel arch.

The wheels appear to be in good order.

Interior

The interior is every bit as sumptuous and luxurious as you’d hope to find in a Rolls-Royce.

The cream leather upholstery with blue piping is not particularly creased or worn and looks to be free of any cracks or splits.

The front seats, though, have numerous tiny nicks and scratches on them, possibly of the sort that might have been caused by a pet dog or other animal.

We can’t be sure.

Anyway, whatever caused these nicks and scratches thankfully chose to ignore the rear seats, which are in very decent condition.

The blue carpets and mats seem to be in good order.

The wood veneers on the dashboard, centre console, door cappings and inserts are rich and glossy. There are a couple of scratches and scuffs on the picnic tables.

The door cards are good, although the driver’s door armrest is rather worn.

The top of the dashboard is faded, warped in places and is coming away from the base of the windscreen.

Part of the back of the driver’s seat is coming loose.

We can’t make any claims about the full functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

Mechanical

The undersides appear to have a decent amount of structural integrity, as far as we can tell.

The engine and engine bay are clean and dry, and everything seems to be in its right and proper place.

History

The car doesn’t come with any history or service record.

Any paperwork we have is photographed and displayed in the photo gallery. We do not have anything else.

Summary

Apart from some cosmetic issues inside and outside, this car seems to be in very reasonable overall condition.

Provided that the engine and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning, this car should be worthy of the time and attention required to get it back to a first-class state.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €8,000 - €12,000.
