Background

This car has a Bentley front grille and badging at the rear stating that the car is a Bentley ‘Brooklands’ model.

It is a LHD auto Silver Spur built for export in 1983 by Rolls-Royce at Crewe in England.

The Silver Spur, which was the long-wheelbase version of the Silver Spirit, was based on the preceding Silver Shadow II to which it bore a distinct family resemblance.

Along with the other models in the SZ series, the Silver Spur was one of the last Crewe-built Rolls-Royces with truly British DNA running through it. The next generations of the ‘The World’s Best Car’ would be built by BMW in a new facility at Goodwood, England.

It featured Rolls-Royce’s familiar four-door monocoque bodyshell, a smooth and powerful 6750cc V8 engine allied to four-speed automatic transmission, all-round independent suspension, adaptive ride control, power steering and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS.

Built in 1983, this LHD auto Rolls-Royce Silver Spur I was bought for the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2015.

For some reason (unknown to us), someone has tried to change the appearance (the grille) and badging of this car to suggest that it is a Bentley ‘Brooklands’ model.

The VIN - SCAZN0000DCX07037 – tells us otherwise, as does the Silver Spur plate above the Rolls-Royce serial number inside the front passenger-side door hinge.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

We haven’t tried to drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic status.

Odometer: 143,884 km.

Exterior

The bodywork and dark blue paintwork are in below average condition and some work will need to be done to restore this Rolls-Royce to its former glory.

The paint is scratched, cracked and split in various places and there is a big scuff to the rear wheel arch on the passenger side.

There is bubbling below the rear screen, on the ‘C’ pillars, on the roof and around the light clusters.

The rubber trim is warped or perished in most places.

There are chips and scuffs along the length of the car on the driver’s side. The paint is faded and crazed on the front wing on the same side. Also on the driver’s side, the front bumper is damaged and split.

There are scratches on the bonnet, along the passenger side of the car, on the front valance, and on the side windows.

The fuel filler flap doesn’t close properly.

Something has been spilled over the roof and down the driver’s side ‘C’ pillar.

Interior

The cream leather upholstery is in decent condition, front and back, although the rear headrest on the driver’s side is split at the back.

The veneers on the dashboard, door cappings and rear picnic tables are cracked and lifting in many places.

The carpets and mats are generally threadbare and moth-eaten.

The headlining is loose and sagging on the passenger side.

The bottom of the driver’s door card is missing, as are parts of the plastic cowling around the steering wheel column.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

The boot is very messy and the carpet is torn.

Mechanical

The engine bay is dusty and parts of the engine, including the carburettor and air intake section (we think), appear to be missing.

The undersides of the car show evidence of rust and flaking in the sills and a few other places.

History

This car comes with no history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

No documents shown in the gallery in any way constitute any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

Clearly, there is some work to be done to this car – outside, inside and underneath.

But, despite what the grille and badging might tell you, ultimately this is a hand-built Rolls-Royce, so the prospect of restoring it should at least be a matter worth considering.

Provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals can be successfully recommissioned.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €2,500 - €5,000.
