Background

Evolution not revolution underpinned the Silver Shadow’s metamorphosis in 1980 to become the Silver Spirit (and in long wheelbase form, the Spur). The basics remained the same with the monocoque bodyshell reworked with wider, lower and decidedly more aerodynamic styling.

Power came via the tried-and-trusted all-alloy V8, tweaked for more power and torque. In early carburetted form 198.5bhp and 340 lb-ft was enough to waft this 2,245kg beast forward with consummate ease, while the hydro-pneumatic self-levelling suspension kept passengers cosseted from uneven road surfaces.

Like all of its illustrious forbears it was engineered to the maximum and supplied with fittings and finishes that were second-to-none – Connolly leather, Wilton carpets, walnut veneers… etc.

In any field of endeavour products are often given the ultimate compliment by calling it “the Rolls-Royce” of that particular world. That hard-earned accolade has always been gained by direct comparison to the automotive company’s sheer excellence, and cars such as the Silver Spirit.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery. In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, [email protected].

VIN: SCAZSOOA2NCX44576.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this 1992 LHD auto Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit II comes with no history or service records.

It has 32,203 kms on its odometer.

It was bought for the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2013.

Eagle-eyed observers among you will have noticed a couple of bits of badging that don’t quite make sense.

There is a ‘Turbo’ badge on the boot lid. We don’t know why, because this car’s VIN number has ‘00’ for the 6th and 7th digits, which designates the presence of the L4101 engine – which is normally aspirated.

The ‘Flying Spur’ badging on the car’s ‘C’ pillars makes even less sense. ‘Flying Spur’ is a Bentley name – this is a Rolls-Royce.

It also has some rather strange after-market mud guards that really shouldn’t be there.

It’s all a bit puzzling.

Anyway.

The good news is that this low-kilometres car is, as far as we can tell, in very good overall condition.

We haven’t started or driven the car, so our appraisal of it is entirely based on its cosmetic appearance.

Exterior

The bodywork is very good and is largely free of any dinks, dents, creases or folds of any significance.

The one exception to that rule is a deep scuff at the rear next to the ‘Silver Spirit II’ badge.

The turquoise-green paintwork is equally impressive, as is the car’s chrome work and its very darkly tinted windows.

The wheels, chrome work, trim, badging (not all of which is legitimate or accurate), and exterior fixtures and fittings are all in decent order.

There are a couple of scuffs on the driver’s side front wing and some paint has rubbed off on the edges of the doors.

The fuel filler cap is stiff and a little reluctant to open, but can be activated manually.

Interior

The interior is every bit as original, authentic and well preserved, as far as we can tell.

The green leather seats are excellent, both front and back, with only the driver’s seat showing any traces of light creasing.

The seats are comfortable and supportive, as you would expect.

The door cards are also in good order, as is the headlining, although there is a switch or light of some description missing from the control panel section above the rear-view mirror.

The wood veneers are also very good overall.

So, too, are the carpets and the sheepskin over-rugs.

A section of the steering column housing has come apart and needs to be reassembled

The boot is in fine condition.

There is some green-painted unattached trim inside the car, but we’re at a loss to know where it came from.

The dashboard and instruments look fine, although we can’t make any claims about the full functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t started or driven the car.

Mechanical

The clean, dry engine and engine bay look fine and the undersides of the car appear to have plenty of structural integrity.

History

This car comes with no history and no service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

No documents shown in the gallery in any way constitute any kind of licensing or registration certification unless otherwise stated.

Summary

This splendid low-kilometres Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit II seems to us to be in really very good condition, provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning and as good as the rest of it.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €10,000 - €15,000.
