Background

The Rolls Royce Silver Shadow is a full-size luxury vehicle produced between 1965 and 1976, Silver Shadow IIs were built from 1977 to 1980. The vehicle was the first by Rolls Royce to feature unitary body and chassis construction. Roughly 30,057 Silver Shadows were built during the car’s overall run, making it the most heavily produced vehicle in Rolls Royce’s history.

Overview

The Silver Shadow was heavily modernized for its time thanks to the public voicing concerns that Rolls Royce was falling behind in automotive innovation. In response, the Silver Shadow was a radical departure from the preceding Silver Cloud. 3.5 inches narrower and 7 inches shorter, the Silver Shadow was able to offer increased passenger and luggage space thanks to better packaging and new unitary construction. New disc brakes replaced the drums of old, and independent rear suspension also helped the car leap into the modern era. From 1970 on, Silver Shadows came equipped with a 6.75L V8 mated to a GM-sourced Turbo Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission, the combination together able to create 189hp. A distinctive feature to these Silver Shadows was a high-pressure hydropneumatic suspension system which Rolls Royce was able to license from Citroen, combined with dual-circuit braking and hydraulic self-levelling suspension. Originally, both the front and rear were controlled by the levelling system, but front levelling was removed in 1969 after it was decided that the rear levelling did almost all of the work. It is thanks to Citroen that Rolls Royce has its excellent reputation for ride quality today.

Exterior

The exterior of this Silver Shadow is done in a two-tone black and red paintjob. The paint is phenomenally smooth, with virtually no imperfections present at first glance. However, there are still a couple to note. There is a small chip in the paint to the left of the grill, three very minor scratches at the corner of the driver’s front quarter panel, and one chip at the driver’s rear wheel arch. The seal between the passenger door and passenger window trim is fairly aged and is cracking as a result. That being said, these marks are extremely difficult to spot during a general walkaround and should not take away from how amazingly the paint has been applied on this car. The only other imperfection to note is that the plastic rear windshield is difficult to see through due to its age. The hubcaps are clean, and the tires show no cracking and plenty of tread left to go.

Interior

The red leather interior inside this Silver Shadow is fantastic. It appears as if it was either excellently preserved or very recently restored, but which of those is true is unclear to us. Regardless, the front seats look excellent with only a few minor creases in the driver’s seat and nothing notable in the passenger. All four door panels are in great condition, but the pocket at the bottom of the driver’s door looking slightly loose, and both rear door panels are showing some threading in the armrest area. The carpets up front and in the back are all neat and tidy. Wooden inlays around the car look excellent and have no major chips or scratches. There is a beautiful emblem inscribed into the glovebox, though we aren’t certain what it is supposed to represent. The headliner is tight up front, and the landau portion at the rear is a little dirty inside, but it folds away quite nicely for some excellent, half-top down driving.

Mechanical

We are pleased to report that the underside of this Silver Shadow is clean. Everything looks as it should, the frame and suspension components are clean, and the exhaust shows a normal amount of discoloration. The engine bay presents itself a little more weathered than the rest of the car but everything is in its proper location.

History

In 2014, the car was registered to Dacula, Georgia. The following year, the car was sent off to Crownsville, Maryland. The seller likely acquired the car shortly after that.

Summary

The Silver Shadow is one of the most recognizable classic Rolls-Royces ever built. Its side profile is all business, as are those who tend to drive them. This specific Rolls has a fantastic paintjob. Dings aside, it was expertly applied, and the colors used look phenomenal on the car. Moving inside, the red leather interior looks excellent and extremely comfortable for both driver and passenger. This Silver Shadow is ready to go, and the landau roof makes it perfect for a wide array of occasions. Don’t miss this opportunity.
