Paul's review

Paul Hegarty - Consignment Specialist Message Paul

“ Very few cars were factory finished in white. Here is rare chance to own a nice well maintained example. ”

Presenting well in a striking colour, with good MoT and service history, and sold with no reserve, this could be a very shrewd purchase allowing the new owner to mix a potential business venture, with enjoyable classic car ownership.

Background

The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II was introduced in 1977 due to the number of upgrades over the first iteration. It was the first car Rolls Royce produced that featured a combined body and chassis as opposed to the body-on-frame construction used before.

The brand was developing and adapting to the ever-changing automotive market, but they still wanted to keep an element of ‘hand built’ to stay true to their values. The combined model run came to 30,057 units and a further 2,336 examples were badged as Bentley T-series from 1965-1980.

Overview

Having had just 3 previous keepers, this Silver Shadow has had a quiet life with just 71,000 miles on the clock. The current owner has had the car for around 6 years, purchasing the car from its previous owner who had the car for around 30 years, which is a testament to how much he loved this car. The previous owner also owned his own garage that performed all the work on the car which would indicate why this example perhaps doesn’t have the invoice records of someone who would take it to a garage to be worked on.

Mainly used for weekends and sunny days, the seller feels it’s time for the Silver Shadow to go to another home where it can continue to be used and enjoyed.

Exterior

The body of the Silver Shadow looks to be in superb condition with straight panels with uniform gaps all round and a distinct lack of any dents, dings or scratches. Being a 44-year-old car, it wouldn’t be a shock to see a small scuff or dent here or there but from the photos this Rolls Royce looks to have a relatively clean bill of health in the body department. The seller tells us that the car has had its arches repaired and what looks to be to a high standard. There have also been plates welded in for the rear wings which should see the car last for another 44 years.

Elsewhere around the exterior, the trim is all in place and the front radiator grille shines resplendently in the sunshine, with the spirit of ecstasy flying free. Windows and lights look to be in good order too, along with the wheels and tyres. The chrome headlight trims are in fine condition with the brush wiper for the headlights intact and reportedly working as intended. One or two of the wheel trims looks to have a minor scuff but it’s not noticeable until you get up close and the seller states that there are two more spare with the car. The tyres also look to be in good condition with plenty of tread left with the front two being recently fitted new. The car also comes with an outside heavy duty car cover.

Interior

Even those not well versed in all things automotive relate the Rolls-Royce brand with luxury, style and good old English class. One of the main reasons for this was the interiors in these high-class vehicles, and the cabin of this Silver Shadow lives up to its brand’s namesake. With swathes of leather, a sprinkling of chrome and enough wood to remind you where you are at every turn of the head it’s hard not to enjoy your time in here.

The condition of the interior in this example are again very good indeed with everything besides one of the rear windows working as intended. The black leather upholstery, black carpet and black headlining are all in good condition with only very minor creasing on the front seat bases. The leather was re-connolised recently whilst in the current owner’s care.

Wooden dashboard is peak classic Rolls-Royce luxury, and it houses all the controls, switches and dials you’d need to keep an eye on the systems underneath. The dash remains in good condition with no obvious signs or damage or lacquer peel. The seller has seen fit to modernise the stereo with a DAB head unit so that stations can still be picked up.

Mechanical

The 6750cc L410 V8 engine mated to an automatic gearbox is reported to be in good condition and as you can see from the video included in the listing it runs sweetly and is wonderfully quiet.

Under the bonnet we can see that things all seem to be in order, there are no signs of fluid leaks, no split pipes or exposed wires and aside from some missing topcoat and a bit of brown watermarks the powerplant looks to be in fine condition visually.

The car has had a new fuel pump recently along with some other minor bits, it has also been MOT’d every year up until last year. Whilst there isn’t a huge stack of history, the Rolls has all the signs of a well looked after car.

History

The car currently does not have an MOT but as the car is 44 years old it is exempt from testing.

The Rolls-Royce comes with its original sale literature, including its sales and service handbook, owner’s handbook, service schedule record book and customer information, all packaged in a neat leather-bound wallet. The V5C is present and shows the correct number of previous owners and there are stacks of printed MOTs with the latest one expiring in 2022. The car also comes with two keys.

Summary

This Silver Shadow II is a shining moment for Rolls-Royce, with advancements from its preceding model and several features that were ahead of its time, continuing the reputation Rolls-Royce had for creating some truly excellent motor vehicles.

If you’ve always wanted one of these models, the time is now to realise that dream as this example looks to be in fine condition with very little needed to get it back into active service.

We’d expect this Silver Shadow II to sell for £10,000 - £15,000 which is a lot of car for the money.
