Background

Whenever a new Rolls-Royce appears, it is the manner in which tradition is balanced against innovation that most intrigues the public, and the Silver Seraph's introduction in 1998 was no exception.

There was certainly no lack of new components in the new car, with almost nothing carried over from its Silver Spur predecessor.

The most significant change was the adoption of BMW engines, the Seraph's power unit being the 5.3-litre, 60-degree V12 of the range-topping 750i.

The Silver Seraph became the first V12 Rolls-Royce since the pre-war Phantom III.

The ZF five-speed automatic gearbox was likewise sourced from the 750i.

Changes to the body seemed less radical but were no less interesting. The styling represented a conscious attempt to recall the looks of the Silver Cloud, with a level of build quality that was higher than ever.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this Silver Seraph is an excellent example of a very fine, hand-built luxury vehicle from a manufacturer whose name is synonymous with quality, exclusivity and prestige.

It is in exceptional overall condition and appears to be entirely authentic and original.

We know that it entered the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2012.

Just 1,676 hand-assembled cars were made during the Seraph’s short four-year production run from 1998 to 2002, when this car was manufactured.

Exterior

The metallic dark purple paintwork is in impressive condition.

The bodywork is free of any dents, bumps or creases that we can see. The wheels are also good all round.

The panel gaps and shut lines are consistent, even and a tribute to the skills of the people who built this car.

The chrome work is very good, as are the lights, badging and most of the trim.

There are some scratches on the bonnet and some lighter ones that appear at various places along the length of the car on the driver’s side. These may be removable with a good machine polish – we don’t know.

The rubber trim around both the windscreen and the rear screen has warped and lifted in places.

Interior

The interior is as sumptuous and luxurious as you’d hope to find in a Rolls-Royce.

With cream leather upholstery and purple carpets and trim details, it is in first-class condition and looks showroom-fresh in almost every respect.

In fact, remnants of the original protective plastic wrap are still visible between the seat cushions and bases.

The magnificent wood veneers are as good as new, as are the door cards, headlining, carpets and mats.

The seats, front and back, have only the very lightest creasing.

There are some small scuff marks on the front passenger’s seat

We can’t make any claims about the full functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start the vehicle.

The Alpine pop-up display didn’t want to pop up when we tried it – which may or may not mean that it’s malfunctioning.

The boot is as pristine as the rest of this car. Lifting up the carpets here or elsewhere reveals…nothing to worry about at all as far as we can see.

Mechanical

Everything looks good and honest. All visible components appear to be almost completely untroubled by time or use.

Everything we can see in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and appears to be clean and dry.

History

The car doesn’t come with any history or service record.

Any paperwork we have is photographed and displayed in the photo gallery. We do not have anything else.

Summary

Apart from one or two cosmetic issues, this car is in remarkable condition and appears to have been well looked after and preserved.

When new, these cars cost US$220,695. It’s easy to see from this example why they commanded such a high price. It is a very impressive vehicle.

Provided that the engine and mechanicals are as good as the rest of it, this car is probably one of the best preserved, low kilometres examples of this model you’ll find anywhere.
