Background

Whenever a new Rolls-Royce appears, it is the manner in which tradition is balanced against innovation that most intrigues the public, and the Silver Seraph's introduction in 1998 was no exception.

There was certainly no lack of new components in the new car, with almost nothing carried over from its Silver Spur predecessor.

The most significant change was the adoption of BMW engines, the Seraph's power unit being the 5.3-litre, 60-degree V12 of the range-topping 750i.

The Silver Seraph became the first V12 Rolls-Royce since the pre-war Phantom III.

The ZF five-speed automatic gearbox was likewise sourced from the 750i.

Changes to the body seemed less radical but were no less interesting. The styling represented a conscious attempt to recall the looks of the Silver Cloud, with a level of build quality that was higher than ever.

Just 1,676 hand-assembled cars were made during the Seraph’s short four-year production run from 1998 to 2002, when this car was manufactured.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery. In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

We have not tried to start or drive the car, and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require engine work and full recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, [email protected].

VIN: SCALA62E02CX08151.

Odometer Reading: 30,164 kms.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this LHD auto 2002 car comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this Silver Seraph is an excellent example of a very fine, hand-built luxury vehicle from a manufacturer whose name is synonymous with quality, exclusivity and prestige.

It is in good overall condition and appears to be entirely authentic and original. It will need work on the engine and steering especially.

We know that it entered a private collection of static display cars in 2019.

Exterior

The light green metallic paintwork is in impressive overall condition and has plenty of shine and lustre to it.

The bodywork is free of any significant dents, bumps or creases that we can see.

The panel gaps and shut lines are consistent, even and a tribute to the skills of the people who built this car.

The chrome work is very good, as are the lights, badging and most of the trim.

There are a few light scratches on top of the grille next to the Spirit of Ecstasy.

There is a tiny dink in the bodywork above the headlamps on the passenger side, some scratches and scuffs around the front number plate holder, and a scratch on the rear passenger-side wing.

There is a small patch of bubbling and flaking evident at the top of the rear driver’s-side door.

The wheels appear to be in good order.

the drivers side wing mirror seems to have had the polarising fluid leak out, there is a picture in the photo gallery.

Interior

The interior is every bit as sumptuous and luxurious as you’d hope to find in a Rolls-Royce.

With pale green/grey leather upholstery and green carpets and trim details, it presents very attractively.

The leather seats, front and back, show only minimal creasing.

There are some marks on the backrest of the driver’s seat, but they look as if they should yield to a cloth and some soapy water.

The carpets and mats are in good condition, as is the headlining.

The magnificent wood veneers on the dashboard, centre console, door cappings, picnic tables and inserts are rich and glossy. There are a couple of scratches and scuffs on the centre console.

We can’t make any claims about the full functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to drive the vehicle.

Mechanical

The bonnet doesn't want to open easily. And the engine has some plugs disconnected and the ECU looks to be in the wrong place.

The steering column moves, so this will need to be addressed also.

The undersides appear to have a good overall, with possibly some light damage to the front underside.

The plastic engine cover is cracked and missing the lower bracket so it's not currently attached properly.

History

The car doesn’t come with any history or service record.

Any paperwork we have is photographed and displayed in the photo gallery. We do not have anything else.

Summary

Apart from one or two very minor cosmetic issues, this car seems to be in very good condition and appears to have been well looked after and preserved.

Provided that the engine and mechanicals are as good as the rest of it, this car should reward its next owner with years of very classy motoring pleasure.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €25,000 - €35,000.
