Background

Developed in the wake of WW2, Rolls-Royce’s Silver Cloud and Bentley’s mechanically identical S1 were graceful, beautifully made, extraordinarily refined, and steadfastly traditional, utilizing body-on-frame construction and a smooth, silent-running straight-six with roots dating to 1922.

Overview

One of just 85 long-wheelbase Series I Silver Clouds made between 1955 and 1958, the auction car is further set apart by a highly elegant sage over sage color combination.

Exterior

The car looks well preserved with a high degree of completeness, and bodywork–a mix of steel with aluminum opening panels–generally appears quite straight. Its striking monochromatic sage green paintwork is really something else, and works especially well here with the cleaner single-headlight nose treatment featured on the SC I and SC II.

Interior

The car’s luxurious, spacious cabin presents similarly. Note the beautiful woodwork on display–not only on the dashboard, but also on the elaborate permanent division with a retractable glass center section and built-in fold-up picnic tables.

Of course, left-hand drive is a big plus for many potential North American bidders.

Mechanical

As noted previously, the car’s engine is an F-head straight-six. Displacing 4.9 liters and utilizing an unusual overhead intake and in-block exhaust valve arrangement, the Sir Henry Royce-designed unit likely produced on the order of 175 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, though in keeping with company tradition of the time, official figures were never divulged.

Under the right side of the longitudinally split hood we spy a modern a/c compressor upgrade, while interestingly, on the right, the car appears to retain its factory style generator.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a GM-sourced automatic, which at the time was arguably the smoothest, most robust of its type made anywhere in the world.

History

This car is offered with limited documentation.

Summary

Traditional body-on-frame Rolls-Royces are extraordinary things, particularly the scarcer examples–as one of 85, the auction car certainly qualifies as such. Bespoke colors and materials are always fascinating when dealing with exclusive vintage automobiles, and in this case, they absolutely make the machine.

Estimated $25,000 - $40,000.
