Background

The Silver Cloud is a luxury vehicle produced by Rolls-Royce between 1955 and 1966. It served as the flagship Rolls Royce model during that period and was built to replace the Silver Dawn. It went through three iterations during its production run. The Silver Cloud III was first shown to the public in October of 1962 at the Paris salon.

Overview

Compared to the Silver Cloud II, the Silver Cloud III was able to shed around 220lbs, and gained in power. Specifically, the Silver Cloud III received 2-inch carburetors, one quarter of an inch larger than the carburetors equipped on the Silver Cloud II. This increased the compression ratio to 9:1, reflecting the higher-octane levels of premium fuel in major markets, although the lower 8:1 ratio remained as an option. The engine also received a nitride hardened crankshaft to reflect the extra power being generated and in response to reports of broken crankshafts in earlier V8 Silver Clouds. External changes were the shift from two headlights to four, and an increased slope of the hood to correspond with the reduced height of the radiator grille.

Exterior

The car is metallic silver. While it looks incredible in the pro shots do not be mistaken, the paint on this car is extremely rough in some areas. The paint was all evenly applied at one point in the car’s life, but the exterior has weathered significantly since then. There are chicken scratches in the paint on both front fenders, the hood of the car, the roof, and more minorly on both rear fenders. All around the car are areas where the paint is cracking and chipping into pieces. At the bottoms of the rear quarter panels there also seem to be a bit of bubbling occurring. Chrome around the car is in fair condition although it does appear that the rear bumperettes have seen some contact over the years. The white wall tires have little to no tread left and would certainly benefit from a deep scrubbing, but the hubcaps seem to be in good condition. Overall, the exterior of this Silver Cloud is absolutely going to need some refurbishing.

Interior

The inside of the car is natural leather. The interior does show signs of weathering, but the extent is nowhere close to what has happened to the exterior. The leather door panels sag slightly in some areas, and all of the natural leather, door panels, seats, and all, could greatly improve following an intense round of detailing. Luckily, although the front seats are creased, they show no holes or tears. The carpets don’t look the cleanest, but they do lay flat in their respective positions. The wooden inlays have survived nicely. The dashboard and rear trays are the cleanest, while the pieces on each door panel have experienced the most abuse over the years. All the gauges mounted to the dash are clean and easily readable. Moving to the rear compartment, condition remains roughly the same. The rear bench appears to have been slightly more creased and thanks to this some legitimate cracks have begun to form in the leather, and they will likely need to be addressed within the next two years. Other than that, the wooden trim is fair, and the rear carpets lay flat as intended. The headliner does seem to have acquired some stains but hangs tightly in place otherwise.

Mechanical

We are elated to report that this Silver Cloud III has a clean undercarriage which harbors no major damage whatsoever. The frame and floorboards are solid, suspension components are all in their proper positions, and the exhaust shows almost no discoloration at all. Under the hood, the engine compartment is clean but not Concours-worthy. Nothing looks majorly damaged, and everything seems to be in its correct location.

History

This Silver Cloud was completed roughly mid-way through 1964. It was sent overseas from England directly to New York and at the time, the car was painted black. Optional extras added to the car were as follows: electric windows, an electric antenna, plain ‘Sundym’ glass, and the Rolls-Royce emblem on the rear of the car was removed by the factory per buyer’s request. After landing in the US, the car was quickly purchased and moved to Philadelphia. In 1984 the car was still in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but had received a new owner at some point. After that, the Cloud’s travels are a bit of a mystery; however, we do know that the seller acquired the car in June of 2008.

Summary

The Silver Cloud and its many iterations were key in establishing Rolls-Royce’s identity in the 60s. The Silver Cloud proved that Rolls was still focused on providing best-in-class comfort, while simultaneously adapting to more modern trends and consumer demands. This specific example while require some form of recommissioning, but once completed the winning bidder will be left with a truly stunning automobile. We are confident that this Silver Cloud will have very little trouble climbing up to its $20,000 - $30,000 estimate.
