Background

The Silver Cloud is a luxury vehicle produced by Rolls-Royce between 1955 and 1966. It served as the flagship Rolls Royce model during that period and was built to replace the Silver Dawn. It went through three iterations during its production run. The Silver Cloud III was first shown to the public in October of 1962 at the Paris salon.

Overview

Compared to the Silver Cloud II, the Silver Cloud III was able to shed around 220lbs, and gained in power. Specifically, the Silver Cloud III received 2-inch carburetors, one quarter of an inch larger than the carburetors equipped on the Silver Cloud II. This increased the compression ratio to 9:1, reflecting the higher-octane levels of premium fuel in major markets, although the lower 8:1 ratio remained as an option. The engine also received a nitride hardened crankshaft to reflect the extra power being generated and in response to reports of broken crankshafts in earlier V8 Silver Clouds. External changes were the shift from two headlights to four, and an increased slope of the hood to correspond with the reduced height of the radiator grille.

Exterior

This Silver Cloud III is finished in a dual black and red paint job. The hood, roof, and trunk are finished in black, and the fenders and sides are finished in a deep brick red. There is also typical Rolls Royce cream pinstriping along the body from the front of the car stopping just short of the rear fender. While the paint is wonderful, it is not without flaws. The housing of the rear driver's side taillight shows some weathering where it meets the paint, there are two small chips on the passenger side rear fender, and some light scratches at the passenger side front fender as well. The weather stripping around the rear windshield has aged rather poorly, and the chrome bumpers do appear to have some minor damage. There are dents in the front and rear bumpers on all four chrome bumperettes.

Interior

The interior of this Rolls Royce is natural leather. The white leather seats are creased but nothing beyond regular use. Conversely, the rear bench looks to be in excellent condition. The carpets up front are a yellow-eggshell shade, likely long overdue for a deep clean, but show no signs of significant damage. However, the rear carpets look like they are in great condition. The wooden dash is in very good shape cosmetically, but the wooden trim along the doors do look slightly rough in some areas. They will definitely need attention if the future owner aspires to show this car competitively. Problem areas for this car are the door panels. The carpet at the bottom of each of the four-door panels have deteriorated to some degree, especially both doors on the driver's side. Housing around the passenger footwell appears to have this same issue, although most of it is covered by the carpets currently in place. The carpet behind the rear bench seats has been stained in a number of areas.

Mechanical

Overall, the undersides look very solid and possessed of what appears to be a good deal of structural integrity.

There is nothing more than the standard bloom of rust dust in evidence anywhere.

History

This car was purchased in 1965 by the first owner in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. There are a few letters from the 60s between the owner and his correspondent at Rolls Royce Canada regarding maintenance including routine tire checks, a new windshield, and repeated issues with the windshield washer pump. We received copies of the records, but Jumping forward by about 40 years, the next document is a Certificate of Title with new owners in Naples, Florida in 2005. After that, it was purchased by the seller in 2008. It is our assumption that the car has been in static display in a dry climate since the consignor purchased the vehicle in 2008. We have sourced copies of the build sheets but unfortunately, they are quite blurry and not much can be confirmed by them.

Summary

This car is in solid condition. Sure, it might need a little bit of love and care but what 50-year-old car doesn’t? This automobile is both handsome and intimidating. The black and red paint on the outside oozes style, and the white interior paired with it proves that whoever owns this car is a high roller. This Silver Cloud III is ready for a new home and would make an excellent addition to any collection.

It should be noted that this vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and there is no history available beyond that displayed in our photography section.

We have not started or driven the car so cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

Please note that the title for this vehicle is in transit.
