Background

The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud arrived in April 1955 as the much-awaited replacement for the Silver Dawn.

The design was much more modern than the pre-war designs customers had become familiar with and for which the firm had become known.

Featuring a pressed steel body on top of a straightforward box-section chassis, the doors, bonnet and boot lid were all formed of aluminium rather than steel to save weight.

The Silver Cloud II arrived in 1959 with a more powerful Rolls-Royce V8 engine under the bonnet.

The Silver Cloud III was introduced in October 1962.

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax on top of the winning bid price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and the only documented history available is displayed in our photo gallery.

We have not tried to start or drive the car, and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released to the buyer or transporter immediately after the sale. For all enquiries relating to Customs, please contact CARS Europe BV.

Purchases will only be released once cleared funds are received. All vehicles must be collected after the payment of funds. All storage charges must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation.

Storage charges payment must be arranged with the storage company. Collection is strictly by appointment only.

Chassis No: LSAE277

Odometer: 40,531 miles.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 1961 Silver Cloud II is a solid example of a particularly grand and stately hand-built Rolls-Royce.

It is in very good overall condition outside, rather less so inside, and appears to be entirely authentic and original.

We know that it was in California in 2010, but we don’t know when it arrived there.

Judging from the largely rust-free undersides, we’d assume that it’s spent most of its life on California’s salt-free roads.

It entered the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2013.

Exterior

The white paintwork is in impressive condition, with just a few stone chips in places.

The curvaceous flanks and straight panels are free of any significant dents, bumps or creases, except for a slight indentation on the lower half of the driver’s door.

The wheels seem to be good all round although there are some nicks and scrapes on the hub caps.

The panel gaps and shut lines are consistent and even.

Most of the chrome work is very good. The exterior rubber trim has cracked and perished here and there.

There are some cracks in the paint at the bottom of the ‘B’ pillar on the driver’s side.

A patch of paint is missing underneath the passenger side front indicator.

Some small spots of superficial rust have formed in a few stone chips on the bonnet.

There are also stone chips on the front and rear doors on the driver’s side.

Interior

The interior hasn’t survived as well as the exterior, largely due to the unwelcome attentions of moths.

The carpets are threadbare and ragged at the bases of the door cards and on the floor, both front and back.

The headlining is stained and discoloured in places.

The leather seats at the front, although structurally sound, are ripped and torn in numerous places.

Their counterparts in the rear are in a far better state.

There are also rips in the leather armrests on both front doors.

The dashboard appears to be in good condition, and the wood and veneers here and elsewhere in the car have avoided any significant fading or cracking.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start the vehicle.

The boot is solid and in good condition. There is what appears to be a new petrol tank fitted.

Lifting up the carpets here or elsewhere reveals…nothing more than a bloom of superficial rust dust.

Mechanical

Everything looks solid and honest. All visible exhaust, braking and suspension components are present, correct and in what seems to be excellent condition. There is no worrying corrosion to see anywhere.

Everything in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and appears to be clean and dry.

History

The car doesn’t come with any history or service record.

Any paperwork we have is photographed and displayed in the photo gallery. We do not have anything else.

Summary

Apart from the upholstery, carpets and headlining, this beautiful 1961 Silver Cloud II is in what seems to be very strong condition.

Provided that the engine and mechanicals are as good as the outside and underneath, we think the next owner’s restoration of the interior will be well worth the time and effort.
