Background

The world was watching very closely when the Rolls-Royce Phantom VII was announced in 2003.

This was the first Rolls from BMW and, it turned out, would be the model that effectively rescued the marque and would give its German rival, Maybach, a very formidable competitor.

The body is mostly aluminium and the extrusions used to construct the aluminium spaceframe were produced by some hydroelectric magic in Norway, lovingly beaten into shape somewhere in Denmark, hand-welded in Germany and turned into a car at Goodwood, England.

The Series 1 Phantom VII (2003 – 2012) is an extraordinary vehicle in almost every imaginable way.

Priced at over £250,000 when new (and that’s for the ‘basic’ Phantom with no extras – i.e., the one that nobody capable of affording a Phantom would ever buy), this car was uncompromising in its display of indulgent, hand-crafted luxury.

It could be ordered in practically any colour and finish and tailored to suit tastes ranging from discreet and stylish to outrageous and inexplicable.

In 2006 the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong ordered 14 extended wheelbase Phantoms in a unique ‘Peninsula Green’ colour. At the time, this was the largest ever single order for the Phantom VII.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and the documented history available is limited to that displayed in our photography section.

We have not tried to drive the car, and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released to the buyer or transporter immediately after the sale. For all enquiries relating to Customs, please contact CARS Europe BV.

VIN: SCA1S68085UX00538.

The car’s odometer is showing just 335kms and indicates that it has a range of 196kms left.

Given that a Phantom can do over 700kms on a combined run, this almost certainly means that this 17-year-old car is still on its first tank of petrol.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

We understand that the car entered the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles in 2012.

With the proviso that we can only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 2005 Rolls-Royce Phantom is effectively a brand-new car with little more than delivery kilometres to show for its life.

Exterior

The bodywork is more or less pristine.

The panels are straight and unblemished, the bodywork is free of any significant flaws, and the panel gaps and shut lines seem consistent and even.

The original silver-over-black paintwork is in first-class condition and is richly glossy and shiny.

Even entirely standard stone chips and road grime are largely noticeable by their absence.

The chrome and exterior trim are in excellent condition, as are the lights, lenses, badging and all exterior fixtures and fittings.

The wheels are in similarly excellent condition.

There is a sticky residue from some removed badging, presumably from a dealership, on the ‘C’ pillars and the boot lid.

Interior

The interior is in the same virtually brand-new condition as the exterior.

The burr walnut veneers on the dashboard, door cappings and inserts appear to be pristine.

The black carpets are thick, deep and seemingly untroubled by either time or use.

The metres of soft cream leather are sumptuous, inviting and devoid of any creases or other flaws that we can see.

The seats, front and back, appear to be in first class condition, although the edge of the rear bench seat on the driver’s side is a little dirty and could do with being shown a damp cloth.

Like everything else in here, the door cards, curtains and headlining are all pretty much as good as new.

The umbrellas that should be inside the doors are still present.

All the Rolls-Royce (and BMW) toggles, stops, levers, switches and buttons are as shiny and classy as the day the engineers at Goodwood installed them (we can’t make any claims about their full functionality as we haven’t tried to drive the vehicle,).

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and entirely as you’d expect to find in a car that’s barely seen any use whatsoever.

The undersides look pretty much untouched by road grime, weather or use.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records beyond what is shown in the photography section. The papers you see are photocopies, not originals.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork that might be shown in the gallery in any way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

The Phantom VII was a very important car for Rolls-Royce. New owners BMW stopped at nothing to create an automotive experience that had the dynamic abilities and engineering integrity to match its unrestrained, bespoke opulence.

It’s hard to think of any vehicle that conveys a greater sense of occasion than a Phantom.

Provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are as good as the rest of the car, we think this time-warp condition example is as close as you can get to a brand-new Phantom – but without the brand-new Phantom price.

We’re confident to offer this virtually unused car for auction with an estimate of €80,000 - €120,000.
