Background

Rolls-Royce's adoption of unitary construction for its new Silver Shadow and T-Series Bentley necessitated the reorganisation of in-house coachbuilder H J Mulliner, Park Ward to enable it to produce new designs on the Shadow floor pan.

These exclusive cars were hand-built in the best traditions of British coachbuilding with materials such as Wilton carpeting, Connolly hide and burr walnut veneers.

Such uncompromising quality resulted in a price some 50% higher than that of the standard Silver Shadow, which was hardly a cheap car.

Nevertheless, demand was strong right from the start, and the vehicles were given their own model name - 'Corniche' - in March 1971.

In Corniche form Rolls-Royce's well-tried 6.7-litre V8 produced around 10% more power than standard and proved capable of propelling the car to a top speed of nearly 200 kph with sports car-beating acceleration to match.

Despite its sky-high asking price, the model proved a major success for Rolls-Royce and arguably played a major part in saving the business.

It remained in production well into the 1990s, the last Convertible examples being delivered in 1995.

This late model LHD auto Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible by Mulliner Park Ward is showing 71,496 kms on its odometer.

VIN: SCAZD42AXCX07967, which puts at being built in 1984, despite the document in the gallery stating 1994.

The car comes with no history or service records beyond whatever documentation is shown in the gallery.

We believe it entered the vendor’s collection in 2012.

In our opinion, this car’s condition is good and although there are one or two largely cosmetic issues to contend with, it’s not hard to imagine it looking really excellent and turning heads wherever it goes.

Exterior

The bodywork is free of any dents, warps, holes, ripples or creases of significance and the panel gaps and shut lines seem consistent and even.

The wheels, chrome, lights, badging and exterior trim are in very reasonable overall condition.

The white paint is good in most places, less so in a few others.

The hood has survived well and although it needs a good clean and appears to have had something spilled over it, it is nonetheless intact and goes up and down as it should.

There are some scuffs and a paint chip on the rear passenger side wing.

The paint is cracked and flaking off adjacent to the front passenger side wheel arch and along the length of the underside of the sill on the same side, where some rust-coloured streaks can also be seen. There are some scuffs around the passenger side front wheel arch.

The front bumper has a few scuffs and scrapes to show for its service.

There are some cracks in the paint and some visible paint touch-up repairs around the front edge of the bonnet on the driver’s side.

There are also some scuffs and paint touch-ups around the filler cap and next to the boot lid on the driver’s side.

The paint is cracked at the base of the ‘A’ pillar on the driver’s side and there are some scuffs and marks around the door handle on the driver’s side.

Interior

The car has a pleasing (to our eyes) patina of age to its interior but is broadly in decent condition and has held up fairly well over the years.

The blue leather upholstery has a few cracks and creases on the driver’s seat but is in pretty good condition all round.

The dashboard veneers have some cracks in the lacquer.

The hood lining is OK but could do with a good clean.

The carpets look a little faded but the lambswool over-rugs still look very decent.

We can’t vouch for the full functionality of instruments, dials, buttons, knobs, switches or levers because we haven’t driven the car.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay seems to be in its right and proper place.

The undersides of the car appear to have a decent amount of structural integrity.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records beyond what is shown in the photography section.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork shown in the gallery in any way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

From what we can see, this grand Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible appears to be just a few jobs and invoices away from being ready for many more years of uniquely classy and opulent service - provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning.

We’re confident to offer this splendid car for auction with an estimate of €30,000 - €50,000.
