Background

If you judge a car manufacturer’s specialism by volume, Porsche is no longer solely a sportscar maker thanks to the massive numbers of SUVs it sells.

And while the Cayenne was the German firm’s best-selling model worldwide in 2022, the mighty Macan accounted for 30% of the cars Porsche GB sold here in 2022.

There’s a very good reason for that - and the reason is that the Macan is simply brilliant: SUVs have always delivered practicality, but Porsche showed it could bring fun and performance to the equation.

Plus, of course, luxury.

The Macan might be touted as the firm’s “compact SUV” but we played with the Porsche configurator and quickly reached £80,000 for an approximation of the specification you see here.

NB: The Macan, which first broke cover in 2014, was originally slated to be called the Cajun, a combination of ‘Cayenne’ and ‘Junior’. However, in proof of the old marketing adage that if you have to explain a name then you’ve failed, Porsche rechristened the production model the Macan.

Overview

Finished in Carmine Red with a matching Garnet Red extended leather interior and Piano Black trim, this 2018 Porsche Macan is still in the hands of its first owner.

Showing just 40,000 miles on the odometer and boasting a full Porsche service history and a blemish-free MoT record, it’s got a massive specification that includes 18-way adaptive Sports seats, PDK, PASM, the Sport Chrono package and much, much more.

Still unconvinced? How about the fact that ‘PO18 GTS’ is only being sold because his new Macan has been delivered, which must be proof positive of the fun he’s had with this one!

Exterior

Being so new and still in the hands of its only owner - a man who’s been in the PCGB for forty years - you’d have every right to expect the Macan to have very good bodywork.

Which it does.

Porsche build quality is up there with the very best of them anyway, so you’ll find mm-perfect shutlines, and smooth flanks that are free of ripples and dinks. There are no dents, dinks or other damage either, and the Garnet Red paintwork shines brilliantly thanks to a regimen that’s comprised nothing but professional hand washing.

The side blades have been finished in the same colour as the rest of the bodywork for a more discreet look, and other niceties include Sport Design mirrors, red brake calipers, and the personalized registration number ‘PO18 GTS’, which will stay on the car.

Speaking of niceties, the 21-inch Sport Classic alloy wheels have been finished in Platinum. We are told this is an unusual colour - the salesman told the seller he’d never sold another - but it’s one that suits the coachwork very well indeed. They’re in a good condition overall but do have some scuffs around the nearside front and both rears.

The matching Pirelli P-Zero tyres are very good and we are told that three of them are new.

We will never get tired of explaining that matching high-quality tyres are an infallible sign of a caring and mechanically sympathetic owner who is prepared to spend the appropriate amount in maintaining their car properly. Their presence does not, of course, preclude the need for a thorough inspection - something the vendor would welcome, by the way – but it does perhaps give you a shortcut into their attitude towards maintenance.

Of course, the lamp lenses, window glass, windscreen, and badges are all excellent.

As for faults, there are some minor stonechips on the front of the bonnet, the lacquer is peeling on nearside mirror, there is a scuff on the boot lid, and chips on nearside front door, a small one just below the O/S mirror and the roof behind the panoramic sunroof.

Interior

You might wonder if a Garnet Red extended leather interior is a bit much, especially when it’s bolstered by matching seatbelts, stitching, and instrument dials.

We think the answer is a resounding ‘no’. The Piano Black trim and extensive brushed alloy help dial it down a bit but it’s still a gloriously OTT colour scheme and we salute the seller for choosing it.

And he didn’t stop there because this is a very, very well specified car.

For example, the front sport seats, which are heated, feature 18-way adjustment and the Comfort Memory package, which means if you can’t get comfortable it’s more likely to be you than them…

The extended leather package includes the dashboard, door cards, and centre console. And it, like the Piano Black trim, is – and you’re ahead of us here, aren’t you? – excellent.

Other highlights are the panoramic roof, ParkAssist with front, rear and Surround View cameras, the Sport Chrono package, auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, a display that shows the speed limit, and the BOSE® Surround Sound System.

As for flaws, there is the gentlest of creasing to the outer edge of the driver’s seat but that’s it. Everything else is pretty much flawless and needs nothing other than continued care.

Mechanical

This Porsche’s specification continues with air suspension with self-levelling, ride-height control, and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) all of which conspire to give huge reserves of comfort allied to sportscar-levels of handling and grip. This really is a car that can do it all.

As you can see, the three-litre V6 engine starts immediately and settles into a good idle with good oil pressure and a healthy charge.

It revs beautifully and makes a wonderful noise, especially if you press the right button on the console. The seller tells us that it’s a “real driver’s car” and rates it as being the best of the SUV – but then as he’s a member of the Macan Register, you wouldn’t expect anything less!

Speaking of having your expectations met, the engine bay is clean and nicely presented, as is the underside both of which you’d be entitled to see given it’s only five years old and been so heavily pampered.

This means the only work for you to do is to get it serviced as the indicator light is on and, perhaps, pop a new MoT on while it’s in the garage so your servicing and MoT are aligned thereafter.

History

Getting a new ticket shouldn’t be an issue either. The existing MoT certificate might only be valid until 31st March 2024 but it was gained, like every single one before, with no advisories.

This (again) is no surprise given its age, recorded mileage, and service history:

  • 16.12.2019 and 21,201 miles – intermediate service and fresh brake fluid by Porsche Centre Guildford
  • 27.01.2022 and 27,226 miles – maintenance service and fresh brake fluid by Porsche Centre Guildford

The recent Vehicle History Check is clear, and the Macan has two key fobs plus the full Porsche book pack and wallet.

Summary

This is a car whose trim and colour was chosen to meet the taste of one man and one man only – and we think buying a car and running it for five years simply because you love it so much is to be applauded.

And it’s not as if it’s Kermit Green or something similarly awful, is it?

We think the combination of a Carmine Red exterior and Garnet Red hide interior works brilliantly.

If you agree, you’ll be delighted to hear that we estimate this one will sell for between  £32,000 -  £37,000 – and given it’s already done most of its depreciating, you might be surprised at how much of the hammer price it retains when the time comes to pass it on.
