Background

First launched in 1996, the Porsche Boxster redefined what was possible – and even desirable – in your bargain basement sports car. And, while the Boxster languished a little as a result of its undeserved reputation as a bit of a hairdressers’ car - a moniker it shared with the Mazda MX-5, another sports car that placed the emphasis more on handling than outright performance – it is up there as one of the best, if not the best, handling cars of all time.

Mid-engined and sporting only two seats, the first Boxster (model number 986) was powered by a 2.5-litre, normally aspirated flat-six engine. The engine size and power output rose over the years, with the base model gaining a 2.7-litre and the sportier ‘S’ gaining a 3.2-litre in 2000.

The second-generation model (designation ‘987’) you see here built upon the success of its predecessor, with a radical redesign that included a more conventional front end. Mechanically, it stayed true to the original recipe – why fix it if it ain’t broken? - offering a 3.2-litre engine for the S model, carried over from the 986 before it was upgraded to a 3.4-litre engine from 2007 onwards.

Performance is strong, even with the 3.2-litre tucked away out of sight – but then it does have 276bhp, enough to propel the Boxster to a top speed of 167mph after passing 62mph in 5.5 seconds.

Inside, the cabin was entirely redesigned and brought up-to-date, with standardized HVAC controls, optional PCM (Porsche communications module, a nifty bit of kit that incorporated the sat-nav, phone, and audio systems) and a more modern look, which means the cabin still looks remarkably fresh to this day.

Overview

Initially supplied by Porsche Centre Solihull on the 27th March 2005, this beautiful Porsche Boxster S has been owned by just three previous keepers, the vendor being the shortest owner after purchasing it from ourselves in August 2023. It is also worth noting that when the vendor purchased the car he did have a post acquisition  inspection carried out, which included a bore score check, and this all came back clear.

With just 44,190 miles covered, the Boxster S comes with an excellent service history, full black leather interior and the superb GT Silver metallic paintwork; not only that, the car has the more desirable six-speed manual gearbox coupled to the fantastic 3.2-litre flat-six engine.

Unfortunately, a change in circumstances and lack of use means the vendor is parting company with the well-cherished 2005 Porsche Boxster S.

Exterior

Finished with the optional extra GT Silver Metallic paintwork, this 2005 Boxster S presents extremely well from front to back.

From the front, the Boxster S has very minor stone chips, which are in keeping with the car's age and mileage. The bumper aligns as it should, as do the wings and bonnet, and both Bi-Xenon headlights are in good order with no discolouration or damage to the lenses.

There are no dings or dents along the sides, and the door shut lines match on each side. The door mirrors are in good condition with no scuffs, and the rear arch stone protectors have performed well in keeping the GT paintwork in good order. The windows and seals are in good condition, with no damage to the rubber seals, and the glass appears to be free from any noticeable marks. The fabric roof is in excellent condition, and other than a few small inevitable creases, there is no damage, and it operates as it should.

At the rear, the Boxster is nice and clean, with no scuffs to the bumper. The rear spoiler activates as it should coming up automatically at speed or via the dash-mounted button.

Fitted with 19” Carrera S alloy wheels known as Lobster Claws, these are in good order with no apparent signs of damage. The tyres are a matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport with the correct N2 rating, and these have covered approximately 5,200 miles since being fitted.

Interior

The inside of the Boxster S is a lovely place. When the car was ordered, the owner treated themselves to a number of optional extras from the options list, including an extended leather package for the doors, centre console, dashboard, sun visors, and Porsche crest headrests.

The electric heated and memory seats are in excellent condition for their age, with just a few light creases consistent with the age and mileage. Both door cards are in good order, with no scuffs or damage.

A leather multifunction steering wheel was also an option, and it is in good condition with no signs of excessive wear. The Carrera white instruments give a clean look. There are no warning lights displayed when the car is running, and the odometer shows a reading of just 44,190 miles. More options include the PCM Navigation system, a six-disk CD multi-changer, and a Bose nine-speaker audio system. All of the switchgear looks in good order with no obvious signs of wear to the buttons, and all are said to be working correctly. There has been a new climate control button kit fitted on 04/10/2023 and an update to PCM2.1 Navigation CD on 07/10/2023.

The carpets are in good order and covered with a set of factory Porsche mats. Both front and rear storage areas are clean and tidy.

Mechanical

Producing 276bhp, the 3.2-litre flat-six is mated to the desirable six-speed manual gearbox. The low mileage Boxster fires up without hesitation and no issues have been reported with the running of the car.

Independent Porsche specialist Parr fitted an IPD sports competition intake plenum and throttle body in 2010 at 30,736 miles, improving performance and making the throttle more responsive.

The gearbox has a smooth change, and as you can imagine, the car pulls strongly through the gears. Red calipers on each corner with drilled discs bring the Boxster to a halt quickly and in a straight line with no problems mentioned.

History

The V5C shows just three previous keepers, and the car comes with both keys. The owner's manuals are present along with the all-important service book, which boasts a healthy number of stamps. There are several invoices to back up the service work.

Servicing has been carried out at the following intervals:

• 04.06.2007 and 17,996 miles – service and fresh brake fluid by the Porsche Centre Solihull

• 29.01.2009 and 25,255 miles – service and fresh brake fluid by the Porsche Centre Bristol

• 28.04.2011 and 31,535 miles – service and fresh brake fluid by Tognola Engineering Ltd., an independent Porsche specialist

• 2013 – 2017 - the car was stored in the previous owner’s heated garage

• 19.07.2017 and 38,025 miles – service and fresh brake fluid by Tognola Engineering Ltd., an independent Porsche specialist

• 03.09.2019 and 40,864 miles – service and fresh brake fluid plus new spark plugs and brake pads by Tognola Engineering Ltd., an independent Porsche specialist

• September 2020 - air conditioning condensers were replaced, and the system was recharged

• 08.10.2021 and 43,395 miles - service and fresh brake fluid plus a new battery by Cotswold Porsche Specialists.

• 26.09.2023 - service, including spark plugs and ignition coils, by Precision Porsche Specialist.

The car's current MoT is valid until 30th June 2024, and since the last test, the Boxster S has covered just 697 miles. However the vendor will be putting a new MoT on the car before the auction ends.

Summary

Low ownership, low mileage, an extensive options list, and a comprehensive service history—what more could you ask for if you are looking for that perfect Boxster S?

The Porsche Boxster S is a superb car for anyone looking for the Porsche experience without the expense of a 911.

With excellent looks, handling, and performance, this is the cheapest way to get behind the wheel of a Porsche, and the Boxster S doesn’t disappoint. We estimate this two-seater sports car will fetch in the region of £11,000 - £14,000.
