Background

Introduced at the 2004 Paris Motor Show and going on sale for the first time in 2005, the second-generation Porsche Boxster (designated 987) built upon the success of its predecessor, with a radical redesign (including a more conventional front end) but remaining largely mechanically similar to start with, offering a 3.2-litre engine for the S model, which was carried over from the 986, before it was upgraded to a 3.4-litre engine from 2007 onwards.

Inside, the cabin was entirely redesigned and brought up-to-date, with standardised HVAC controls, optional PCM (Porsche communications module, incorporating sat nav, calling and audio systems) and a more modern look, which means the cabin still looks remarkably fresh to this day.

Produced across two generations (.1 from 2005 until 2008, and .2 from 2008 until replacement in 2012) the early 3.2-litre models may be less powerful than the later S models, but are widely regarded by enthusiasts as being the ‘sweet spot’ of performance and reliability within the 987 range.

Overview

An original, UK-delivered C16 code car, this 2005-registered Boxster S boats the earlier 3.2-litre flat-six engine carried across from the preceding 986 generation Boxster S, which is widely regarded by enthusiasts as being one of the most reliable and dependable early water-cooled flat-six engines offered in Porsches of the period.

Finished in GT silver over a light grey leather interior, this Boxster S was handsomely-equipped by the original purchaser, with the following optional extras specified by the first owner:

- 267: Auto-dimming mirror

- 268: Rain sensor (for wipers)

- 342: Seat heating

- 692: CD Changer

- 981: Extended leather (dashboard and door panels)

- 983: Leather seats

- 991: Leather-covered steering wheel airbag

Purchased by the current keeper in August 2021, this silver-over-grey Boxster S has lived an easy-going life, having covered less than 1,000 miles during their ownership, and averaging just over 900 miles per year since new.

Recently, new front coil springs were fitted in May 2021, a new nearside coolant crossover pipe has been fitted in October 2021, and a new battery in July 2022. Despite its low mileage, the service book shows six stamps from new, with the most recent being in January 2021 at 14,296 miles.

Exterior

Finished in GT Silver, this Boxster S presents wonderfully throughout, in keeping with its low ownership and low recorded mileage.

Looking along the flanks of the vehicle, there are no obvious signs of any impact or accident damage, nor any noticeable scuffs or major marks to the paintwork. In fact, the only particularly visible blemish we’ve noted is a small ‘pin’ dent on the nearside door, which is visible in photograph number 78 in the gallery below.

Of course, being finished in silver, the usual signs of wear such as stone chips and light marks are - by-and-large - hidden, which no doubt helps to keep this particular Boxster looking young. On the lower edge of the bumper, however, there are a few deeper scratches, though these are hidden unless looking underneath the vehicle.

Up above, the folding black roof is in great condition, with no rips, tears or damage, and no reported operational issues.

As far as we can tell, all trims, badges and accessories are present-and-correct, including the optional (and desirable) wind deflector which fits between the headrests, and is often lost to the passage of time. The rear number plate is showing some wear on the lower nearside edge, though this does not affect its legibility.

All four wheels are in excellent condition, with only a few light marks and imperfections noted to the inner edges of the spokes on some wheels, and a very light kerb graze on the nearside rear wheel.

Interior

Inside, the good news continues unabated, as the two-seat cabin remains in outstanding condition, giving further evidence of a cherished and easy-going life.

The seats, for example, show only the lightest signs of usage - the driver’s seat mostly - with a few small creases to attest to their usage. The carpets show slightly more signs of life, with a few stains/flat spots which may require attention or replacement by a particularly fastidious owner, though there is no immediate need for this.

987/997-era Porsches often suffer with ‘sticky’ switches, particularly on the HVAC and PCM controls. In this case, however, even these high-traffic areas are remarkably free of wear, with the only particularly discernible marks being visible around the roof position switch, located along the centre console.

Up above, the inner lining for the roof is in excellent shape, with no rips or tears.

Both the ‘frunk’ and the rear luggage compartments present well, with only a very tiny amount of residue visible around the coolant filler cap in the rear.

There are no warning lights visible on the dashboard (other than the low fuel warning in the video below) and no reported faults from our team.

Mechanical

In the rear, the flat-six engine in this Boxster S fires up happily even when warm, and shows no signs of any untoward noises or behaviours.

There is, however, a slight coolant leak from the front pipes noted by our team, which will require investigation by the next owner.

Underneath, the chassis looks to generally be in good condition for a vehicle of this age, though there are some more visible ‘scabs’ to the exhaust back box and some signs of wear around the jacking points, though these were not noted in the most recent MoT exam.

The latest service was carried out by German Automotive LTD in January 2021 at 14,296 miles, consisting of a ‘minor’ service and brake fluid change. In October 2021, the coolant was flushed/changed, along with the nearside coolant ‘crossover pipe’ being changed.

The most recent MoT exam took place on 12 August 2022, and resulted in a clean first-time pass with no advisory items. In fact, this Boxster has not failed an MoT since 2009, which was only due to a mis-aligned headlamp.

History

With only three registered keepers from new, including the vendor, this Boxster S has enjoyed remarkably low ownership over the years.

Included with the vehicle is the V5 showing just two former keepers, a stamped service record with a total of six maintenance stamps (and a further three for recalls/brake fluid changes) a number of owners manuals and handbooks, and the OE leather document wallet.

In addition to manuals, there is also a brace of MoT certificates to help validate the low mileage on the odometer, a handful of old tax discs (remember those?) and a few invoices for works carried out during the vendor’s ownership, which show the following:

- New battery in July 2022

- Coolant change, new nearside coolant crossover pipe October 2021

- New front coil springs in May 2021

- Oil change (Castrol 0w40) filter change and brake fluid change in January 2021 at 14,296 miles

There are two keys with the vehicle.

As always, we’ve photographed all of the documentation we’ve received with the vehicle, and this is available to view at the end of the extensive gallery below.

Summary

With mid-engined balance, fantastic on-road handling and GT car levels of comfort and refinement, it is no wonder that the Boxster remains popular with enthusiasts, owners and drivers with an affinity for the Porsche brand, with the more powerful ’S’ models always attracting the most interest.

This 2005-registered 3.2-litre ’S’ example boasts a fantastic factory specification, low mileage and low recorded ownership, and remains in outstanding condition throughout.

Ideal for a collector or discerning enthusiast, this is a wonderful opportunity to obtain a 987S in fabulous condition and that is ready to enjoy or have as part of a collection.

Offered for sale with an estimate of £15,000 to £20,000 this Boxster S offers year-round flat-six thrills at a price that is hard to argue with.
