Background

The Porsche 968 is a front engine sports car manufactured by Porsche AG from 1991 to 1995. The 968 was the final iteration of a series of vehicles from Porsche designed to be water-cooled, front-engine, and rear wheel drive. The 968 was the last front engine vehicle designed by Porsche until the introduction of the Cayenne SUV in 2003.

Overview

Designed by Harm Lagaay, a Dutch designer also responsible for the 924 and 944, the 968 was built to be a restyled evolution of the 944. The front of the car was meant to resemble the flagship 928, the rear of the car was its own unique design, and the interior was largely borrowed from the 944 S2 aside from the control knobs and switches. Powered by an upgraded version of the 944’s inline-four engine, upgrades to the 968’s motor include: a higher compression ratio (11:1), lighter crankshaft, lighter pistons, lighter crankcase, revised intake valves, and revised intake manifolds. The 1993 model year like today’s example didn’t see many changes at all. A pollen filter was added to the AC units for improved cleanliness, and several special packages were introduced.

Exterior

The dark metallic green exterior of this 968 is clean but not without issues. The front bumper has a large warp on top in front of the hood and next to the driver’s headlight. Lower down, the front bumper definitely has some rock chips and a mark in the top cone by the passenger’s front wheel, but the three most obvious marks front and center are actually holes to mount a license plate. Neither the driver’s side of the car, nor the rear shows any major damage. On the passenger side, the door appears to have a small scratch and several tiny chips next to each other, but it is unclear of the door is actually dented. The paint also appears to be deteriorating around the door handle. Glass around the car including the lights and indicators is clean and unbothered. The OEM wheels on the car are clean and show no major curb rash. Tire tread looks decent, but we always recommend a new set. Overall, this 968’s exterior is clean driver quality because although the paint looks clean from afar, there do seem to be dents in multiple areas and numerous small scratches around the car.

Interior

The two-tone black and light tan leather interior in this 968 looks excellent at first glance. Both seats are lightly creased but show no holes or tears. In the backseat, the light tan bucket seats show minimal creasing and no structural damage. The floormats would benefit from a deep cleaning but lay flat in their respective positions and show no major damage. The black leather dash pad shows no cracks, and the black dashboard is clean. All of the gauges mounted within are clean and easily readable. The air vents and all of the remaining switches and buttons appear clean as well. Viewers with a keen eye will notice that a previous owner had a ‘Blaupunkt’ aftermarket stereo installed for a touch of modern convenience. The black leather shifter has some visible wear, but the steering wheel is in solid condition. The door panels have some minor scuff marks, but these could easily be addressed with some good old TLC. The headliner looks clean and hangs tightly in place just like the sunshades. Overall, this 968 has a quality interior with little in the way of damage to speak of.

Mechanical

Under the hood, the four-cylinder engine looks particularly clean, as do all the components that surround it. The various black covers have survived nicely and show no fading. It must be noted that the battery is not with the vehicle. This 968 also has a clean undercarriage as well. The frame and floorboards are solid, the suspension components are all in their proper locations, and the exhaust shows very little discoloration.

History

Purchased new in 1993 in Lakewood, Colorado, the 968 bounced around for 10 years with its first owner. In addition to Colorado, the car also pops up in Pennsylvania and Ohio before being sold in 2003 with 104,585 miles on the clock. The second owner kept the car for less than a year in Fishers, Indiana, and barely drove the vehicle before selling it. The third owner bought the car later in 2003 and returned the car to its original home state of Colorado, and last recorded mileage on the Carfax read 123,858 miles. Based on the documents available to us we believe the seller acquired this car in September of 2012.

Summary

The Porsche 968 is one of the more obscure cars Porsche ever made. The combination of water-cooling, a front-mounted engine, and rear wheel drive was exciting for the time, but, the 968 ultimately failed to acquire a mainstream following. Today’s example is clean aside from some bumps on the exterior, and its solid condition makes us confident that the sports car will have few issues hitting its $10,000 - $20,000 estimate.
