“ Low Ownership - 28,000 miles - Exceptional ”

Prices of Porsche 928s are low compared to its 911 contemporary, making them possibly the biggest bargains in the classic supercar arena.

Background

Famously intended to replace the venerable Porsche 911, the 928 ended up complementing the rear-engined model perfectly; with a mighty V8 engine under the bonnet, the 928’s 50:50 weight distribution endowed it with both huge power and sublime handling – and while its size might count against in along tight, twisty lanes, nothing feels better in sweeping, high-speed curves, especially in a car like this, where that rear wing helps crush it into further into the tarmac.

Its civility helps crush continents, too. With a 320bhp engine and a super-slippery, wind tunnel-honed shape, three-figure speeds are as civilized as they are effortless; while there might not be many places left where you can explore the outer reaches of its 160mph+ top speed, covering two miles in a minute is laughably easy.

It’s an easy supercar to live with, too. The visibility from the driver’s seat is unparalleled, as are the ergonomics, which means the 928 can easily be used as a daily driver, dismissing the weekly Waitrose run with the same disdain as it does a 500-mile road-trip; the boffins at McLaren might claim to have redefined everyday usability but we think the Porsche 928 beat them to it by a couple of decades…

Overview

With just one owner from new until 2019 and just one more since, this Velvet Red Porsche 928 S4 has one of the most impressive MoT histories we’ve ever seen.

It’s got a solid service record too, and well under 28,000 miles on the odometer, making this automatic example one of the very nicest we’ve had pass through our hands.

Coming to auction from a private collection where it has barely turned a wheel in the past four years, this is your chance to bid on an impeccable example of a classic German supercar.

Exterior

The Velvet Red paintwork is excellent with a great shine and an almost complete absence of damage.

Take a look at the areas around the driver’s door lock, which is in such good shape the two owners must be some of the most fastidious people we’ve ever come across.

The underlying panel are no less impressive: the shutlines are tight and consistent, the flanks are free of ripples and car-park dinks, and the swagelines align neatly.

The sunroof seals tightly too, opening and closing at the press of a button.

The rear spoiler, vast and black, is also in good shape. As are the bumpers, which might be sleek and aerodynamic but they’re a magnet for dents and dinks if the owner is anything less than meticulous in their parking. There are no such worries here because these are bright and shiny and unsullied.

The lamp lenses are good too, and the headlamps pop up and down to order. The window glass is excellent, as are the badges.

The details bear scrutiny, too. Like the wiper arms, which are free of rust and flaking paint. And the offside rear window that still sports its ‘UNLEADED FUEL ONLY’ sticker.

The factory alloy wheels aren’t only in good shape, they’re also fitted with a matching set of good Continental ContiSport Contact tyres,

We will never get tired of telling you that experience shows that matching high-quality tyres are an infallible sign of a caring and mechanically sympathetic owner who is prepared to spend the appropriate amount in maintaining their car properly. Their presence does not, of course, preclude the need for a thorough inspection - something the vendor would welcome, by the way – but it does perhaps give you a shortcut into their attitude towards maintenance.

Bodywork that needs doing? There’s nothing here that we can see but why not wend your way up to Huddersfield to check for yourself?

Interior

“The eighties are calling and they want their interior back!”

Glorious, isn’t it? With Linen leather seats that are piped in red to match the paintwork, the cabin is every bit as impressive as the exterior.

Electrically adjustable, the driver’s seat also has a three-position memory function, which is handy if you change drivers regularly.

Their condition is good, with undamaged leather facings, plump and firm underpinnings, and a very of-the-period look to them.

The door cards, headlining, and carpets are all so good it’s hard to believe they’re well over three decades old.

The dashboard, which is a paragon of clarity and ergonomics, is flanked by the 928’s iconic round switches and the centre console contains a plethora of controls. All the controls still have bright white lettering.

Touch points like the steering wheel, gearknob, and foot pedals are all in great shape but then that’s what you get when Porsche engineering comes in contact with a pair of meticulous owners.

Speaking of which, it’s great to see the original Grundig Porsche headunit is still in place. This might lack some of the modern conveniences like Bluetooth we’ve all come to reply on but what separates the good cars from the great is originality and this one has that in spades.

The red-trimmed boot has a useful elastic luggage net to stop your belongings flying around the place. Lifting the (very good) red carpet shows a space saver spare wheel and a solid metal floor. There’s also a lead for the battery trickle charger.

Flaws are minor. The two interior door releases are a little faded but then that seems to be one of the few places the 928’s cabin tends to show its age.

There are a few marks on the rim of the glovebox lid too, but that’s about all we can see that might need your attention at some point.

Mechanical

The engine bay is clean and tidy. Most would be happy to leave it as it is but those among you with a passion for detailing could spend a useful couple of days under the bonnet.

The 928’s MoT certificate is valid until April 2024 – and it was gained, like almost every recorded test, with no advisories.

And the sole exception, the MoT test that ruined the 928’s clean sweep? It was for a failed numberplate light back in 2015…

The front undertray is a little scuffed but only a little. Jacking points look solid but then, as we’ve established, this is a 928 that’s been untroubled by the attentions of even the most ruthless of MoT testers.

History

As you can see, it is due a service but only on a time-elapsed basis as it’s only covered a few hundred miles since its last one in 2018.

  • 10.01.1994 and 9,751 miles – service by Glenvarigill Porsche
  • 20.05.1996 and 14,291 miles – service by Glenvarigill Porsche
  • 19.05.1999 and 18,421 miles – service by Glenvarigill Porsche
  • 11.04.2004 and 25,616 miles – service by Glenvarigill Porsche
  • 20.07.2012 and 26,869 miles – service by Porsche Edinburgh
  • 04.09.2017 and 27,342 miles – service by Brian Miller Motors, independent Porsche specialist
  • 13.11.2017 and 27,380 – new timing belt and waterpump by David Phillips Autos Ltd
  • 27.02.2018 and 27,455 miles – service by Brian Miller Motors, independent Porsche specialist
  • 14.09.2018 and 27,402 miles – new battery, fuel pump and filter by David Phillips Autos Ltd

The video shows it starts promptly, idles nicely, and revs with the understated menace the 928 has made its own.

The recent Vehicle History Check is clear. Obviously.

Summary

Prices of Porsche 928s are low compared to its 911 contemporary, making them possibly the biggest bargains in the classic supercar arena.

How much of a bargain? Barely run in by 928 standards, we expect this example to sell for between £30,000 and £35,000, which is a real snip in anyone’s books, especially for a car as well-preserved and maintained as this.

And it’s cars like this, cars with few owners, a tiny mileage, and an impeccable provenance, that hold their value best, so any premium you pay now for this one compared to the price inferior examples sell for, should be repaid when the time comes to sell it.
