Winner - are you with me?

Background

When the Porsche 928 was first launched in 1978, engineering aficionados were quietly amazed, automotive journalists applauded, car designers wept salty tears of pure envy and, of course, 911 fanatics were appalled.

Then, it looked like nothing we’d seen before.

Now, it looks like nothing we’ve seen since.

The 928 was, and is, an engineering, design, performance and usability masterclass.

Arguably, only McLaren has come close to simultaneously delivering such a step change across all four of those tick boxes in the intervening years.

The Porsche 928 GTS was the final word in the 928 line-up of ground-breaking grand tourers, with the mighty 345bhp V8 5.4-litre 32 valve DOHC GTS engine under the bonnet and sublime handling, courtesy of 50:50 weight distribution.

Even today, a 928 GTS is a very fast and powerful car, capable of taking you across continents, time zones and cultures with power in reserve and a great deal of style and panache.

But it is also practical, usable and so well engineered, even by Porsche’s lofty standards, that it’s as comfortable thundering down an Autobahn as it is going to your local shops.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery. In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, [email protected].

VIN: WP0ZZZ92ZNS800720.

The car comes with no history or service records beyond whatever documentation is shown in the gallery.

It entered the vendor’s static display collection in 2012.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to drive this vehicle and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 1992 Porsche 928 GTS is in very good condition for its age and is an excellent example of a ground-breaking model from a legendary manufacturer.

The car starts and runs nicely, but we cannot get any power to some of the dashboard lights and, consequently, the car’s odometer cannot be read.

Exterior

The car’s bodywork appears in very good overall condition and there are no significant faults, dents or creases to mention.

The doors still close with the satisfying weight, precision and authority we’ve come to expect of a 928.

The grey paintwork, too, looks lustrous and shiny.

The wheels are very good, save for some very light scuffing on the driver’s side front wheel.

There are some paint chips on the front wing on the passenger side and a small paint blemish on the bonnet.

The leading edge of the bonnet has a couple of scratches, scuffs and paint chips to show, as does the front valance and the top of the driver’s side front wing.

Beyond that, there are a couple of scuffs on the driver’s door and some scratches on the rear spoiler and on the boot lid next to the lock.

As is so often the case with cars that haven’t been used for years, the gas struts on the bonnet and boot lid don’t stay up.

The lights, lenses, badging and exterior fixtures and fittings are all decent.

Interior

The interior carries on the good news.

Aside from a small hole in the driver’s seat cushion, the light grey leather upholstery is in excellent condition, front and back, and supports our theory (as yet unproven), that this car is unlikely to be a high-kilometres example.

The door cards, headlining, sun-roof and extra-fluffy carpets are all in broadly good order.

The parcel shelf looks to have been dismantled but the luggage area itself seems OK and is currently home to space-saver spare wheel.

The carpets and mats are OK but, like the rest of the interior, could do with a good clean.

There is a photocopy of a manual (in French) for a 928 S (this car is a GTS).

We can’t make any claims about the full functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other instruments as we can’t get power to the full array of electronics and haven’t driven the car.

Mechanical

The undersides of the car look untroubled by either use or time and appear to have a good amount of structural integrity.

The engine and engine bay are a little dusty but, as far as we can tell, everything is present and correct.

History

The car doesn’t come with any history or service records, unless otherwise stated.

Any paperwork we have is photographed and displayed in the photo gallery.

We do not have anything else.

Summary

Apart from the inability to read the odometer and one or two pretty insignificant scuffs here and there, this car seems to us to be in very good condition and appears to have been well looked after and preserved throughout the course of its long life.

Provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €30,000,000 - €40,000.
