“ Fantastic Service History – Desirable GTS ”

The car is in exceptional condition, aesthetically and mechanically. It really is very good indeed

Background

When the Porsche 928 was first launched in 1978, engineering aficionados swooned, automotive journalists applauded, car designers wept salty tears of pure envy and, of course, 911 fanatics were appalled.

Then, it looked like nothing we’d seen before.

Now, it looks like nothing we’ve seen since.

The 928 was, and is, an engineering, design, performance and usability masterclass.

Arguably, only McLaren has come close to simultaneously delivering such a step change across all four of those tick boxes in the intervening years.

The Porsche 928 GTS was the final word in the 928 line-up of ground-breaking grand tourers, with the mighty 345bhp V8 5.4-litre 32 valve DOHC GTS engine under the bonnet and sublime handling, courtesy of 50:50 weight distribution.

Even today, a 928 GTS is a very fast and powerful car, capable of taking you across continents, time zones and cultures with power in reserve and a great deal of style and panache.

But it is also practical, usable and so well engineered, even by Porsche’s lofty standards, that it’s as comfortable thundering down an Autobahn as it is pootling off to your local garden centre.

Of course, with these technological marvels from Zuffenhausen it’s vital to hunt down an example that’s been really well cared for and where the previous owners have spent all the right money (and lots of it) on the right things at the right times.

We think your hunt may be over.

Overview

We know this vehicle.

In 2019 we sold it to the current vendor, a man with a fine collection of classics who never compromises on quality, condition or care.

That’s why he bought it in the first place.

He’s only selling because he’s tending towards a Lotus theme for his ongoing collection and so finds himself parting company with this car and one or two others.

The car is in exceptional condition, aesthetically and mechanically, and we can report that it drives extremely well indeed.

The vendor tells us that the engine compression is pretty much the same as when the car left the factory.

It may have 117,000 miles on the clock, but given that a 928 is almost as over-engineered as anything NASA ever fitted to a Saturn V rocket, you should consider it to be barely run in.

He has had the car properly maintained and serviced throughout his five years of ownership, has addressed any bodywork and paint issues that needed addressing, and has spared no expense in ensuring the car’s optimal upkeep.

In 2019, he spent over £6K with Norfolk Premier Coachworks (Porsche specialists) on making the bodywork as good as it could be.

He has just spent over £2K having the car serviced and fettled by Dnb Mechanical Services of Norfolk.

This car has had no advisories on its MoT certificates for the last seven years.

In short, it’s really very good indeed.

Exterior

The bodywork is in irreproachable condition, and all panel gaps and shut-lines are crisp, consistent and even.

The doors close with all the heft and precision we have come to expect and demand of Porsche.

The wheels (which have been refurbished) look to be in very fine fettle and the matching Michelin Pilot Sport tyres appear to have plenty of life left in them.

The lights, lenses, badging and trim have held up with commendable stoicism.

The dark blue paintwork really pops and sings in the sunlight and has plenty of shine and lustre.

There’s really nothing to criticise but, if we were being very picky, we might mention a slight scuff to the paintwork at the top of the rear bumper, a couple of tiny stone chips on the bonnet, and one or two very light scratches on the nearside swage-line trim.

Interior

The good news continues pretty much unabated on the interior.

The light-grey leather upholstery has only a few creases on the outer bolsters of the driver’s seat to attest to any use, and the seats are many years away from having anything even close to an ingrained patina.

The door cards are fine, although the thick light-grey carpeting at their bases could probably use a professional clean.

The headlining is fine (and the sunroof works), and the carpets and mats have resisted the passage of time with rare fortitude. The drivers window seal needs attention.

There are one or two minor scuffs and light scratches on the dashboard plastics but, overall, everything is in very good order.

We didn’t press every button, flick every switch or twiddle every knob, but those we did press, flick and twiddle responded in a timely, faithful and predictable fashion however, the aircon doesn't blow cold air.

The rear luggage area is also in very good order and contains a space-saver wheel and some tools.

Mechanical

The engine bay is spectacularly clean, shiny, dry and tidy.

We’d give it 5 stars on a food hygiene rating, never mind a mechanic’s report, and everything appears to be in its right and proper place.

The undersides look to be as squeaky clean and minty fresh as the rest of the car.

History

This car comes with plenty of comprehensive history, most of it courtesy of main dealers during the car’s earlier years.

The rest of the car’s maintenance, servicing, repair and upkeep has been carried out by respected specialists such as GT One Ltd, Charles Ivey of Chelsea, and many others.

There are copious bills and invoices covering more recent servicing and maintenance wok carried out while the car has been in the care and curation of the current vendor.

It comes with a V5, full sets of keys, various manuals and guides, a clear HPI report, and has an MoT that’s valid until 1.4.25.

Summary

The GTS is the 928 to have, there’s little doubt about that.

But you’d be very well advised to spend decent money on getting one that ticks all the right boxes for history, condition and provenance.

This car does all that and a great deal more.

The successful bidder will have the satisfaction of knowing that they’ve bought a particularly good example of one of finest and most capable grand tourers of its (or any other) generation.

We suspect there aren’t many this good still out there waiting to be discovered.

We are happy to offer this car for auction with an estimate in the range of £25,000 - £30,000.
