Background

When the Porsche 928 was first launched in 1978, engineering aficionados and automotive journalists applauded.

Porsche 911 fans were not quite so happy.

Then, the 928 looked like nothing we’d seen before. Now, it looks like nothing we’ve seen since.

The 928 was, and is, an engineering, design, performance and usability masterclass.

The Porsche 928 GTS was the final word in the 928 line-up of ground-breaking grand tourers, with the mighty 345bhp V8 5.4-litre 32 valve DOHC GTS engine under the bonnet and sublime handling, courtesy of 50:50 weight distribution.

Even today, a 928 GTS is a fast and powerful car, capable of taking you across continents with power in reserve and a great deal of style and panache.

This vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and the documented history available is limited to that displayed in our photography section.

We have not tried to start or drive the car, and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

Built in 1994, this Porshe 928 GTS was bought for the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2012.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to drive this car and can therefore only comment on its appearance, we think that this 1994 Porsche 928 GTS is in very good condition and is an excellent example of a car that will be forever considered a landmark in automotive engineering.

Odometer: 21,347 km.

Exterior

The panel fit remains true and the shut lines are clean and even.

The bodywork has no dents, creases or bumps of any significance.

The cream paintwork is very good and still has plenty of lustre and shine.

The wheels are good, as are the lights and lenses. The gold finish on the badging is wearing away and part of the badging on the passenger side has broken off.

There’s a small scuff below the driver’s door handle and some marks just above the rear light cluster on the passenger side and at the bottom of the door on the same side.

There are a few very small stone chips around the front of the bonnet.

These are very minor flaws on a car that otherwise presents extremely handsomely from every angle.

Interior

Cream leather upholstery with dark grey carpets makes the interior a very pleasant and classy place to be – and all of it is in remarkably good condition.

The seats, front and back, have only a minimal amount of creasing.

The door cards and headlining are in good order, as are the carpets and mats.

The wood and veneers on the steering wheel, gear selector, door inserts and centre console remain rich and glossy. The instruments, dials and fascia all look fine.

The boot is in equally impressive condition and, unusually, the rear parcel shelf is still in place.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay is clean, dry and appears to be in its right and proper place.

It has been commented upon that the car does not have a catalytic converter. We don't know if it has or if it hasn't. Bidders should investigate before they bid.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

Any paperwork shown in the gallery is a facsimile and in no way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

We think this is a very strong example of a fine and important model from one of the world’s most respected marques.

Provided that the engine and mechanicals are as impressive as the rest of it, this low-kilometres 928 GTS should provide its next owner with many years of motoring pleasure.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €25,000 - €40,000.
