“ Light project – Mechanically sound ”

This is a light project based on a structurally and mechanically sound car (the all-important ‘Kidney Bowls’ have been restored! The 911 has been well-maintained and drives beautifully.

Background

‘Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes-Benz?

My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.’

In fact, scratch that, there’s a reason why that’s the case. Big man, if you’re giving out freebies, then I’ll have Porker and a 911 at that please. There’s a reason why generation after generation of this Stuttgart wonder has been, and continues to be, voted ‘best sports car’.

In one of the automotive world’s most extraordinary tales of longevity (putting aside a momentary wobble at the tale end of the Seventies) the rear-engined, six-cylinder sports car from Stuttgart is still going strong in the present day.

Having first appeared in 1963, that means classic 911 aficionados can choose from an incredible variety of flavours. From the elegant Butzi Porsche designed original, with its evolved 356 looks and in all its air-cooled glory, through legendary hardcore ‘S and Carrera RS models, to the barnstorming Turbo. And pause for breath.

There’s a car for every budget, and you’ll be assured of clean lines, well-engineered mechanicals and groovy period cabins that combine to give that quintessential 911 experience.

Engines were naturally aspirated or fuel-injected until 1975 arrival of the Turbo, while gearboxes could be had in manual or semi-auto Sportomatic flavours.

Your final choice: tin-top, targa or ragtop? A convertible roof allows pure, unadulterated top-down pleasure, whilst a Coupe looks pure but does deny you any free-flowing pleasure. Porsche, of course, combined both to become the targa-meister. The choice is yours.

If that’s you, then this well-maintained example should be right up your street. Having driven it we can confirm that life’s a blast when the top’s off and an air-cooled six has your back.

Overview

Andy Weekes has owned this 911 Cabriolet for 18 years and it has done less than 6000 miles in that time. “I drove the car up to Bonhams, which was a journey of 130-odd miles and in very high temperatures too. The 911 ran really well (as it always has), the engine temp stayed good, and the oil pressure was still on 5 when I got there.

“I haven’t driven it that far for years and I enjoyed it so much that I very nearly withdrew it from sale – however, my wife would divorce me if I did! The only issue I found was that it was sometimes tricky to do a quick gear change into second gear, but it seemed okay if I took my time. I had the gearbox rebuilt a few years ago, with new synchros, etc. However, I recently fitted a short shift lever and I think it probably needs a bit of adjustment”

Andy says that the engine ran very well. “It’s responsive and sounds great. We have a Porsche specialist garage near here which has done some work on the car, and 6 years ago commented that it is one of the best performing 3.2s that they have driven”.

That self same specialist gave the car a thorough going over three years ago and only picked up on a small oil leak from the oil tank. “The brakes and suspension are very good; the brakes were overhauled not too long ago in terms of miles, with new calipers, discs, plumbing, etc. Quite a few suspension bushes were replaced. The shocks were tested a few years ago and were very good. And of course, it passed an MoT test a couple of weeks ago”.

“The main reason that I am selling is due to lack of use,” he explains. “My wife can’t drive it, as she’s quite short, and does not like the driving position or the heavy clutch; unfortunately, I’ve had some serious health issues since pre-covid and she worries about us being away with the car and having to drive it back herself. We also seem to need to carry so much stuff around now for the grandchildren we have had since its purchase, so it’s just too small for to use for those journeys”.

Exterior

“The car is Rubin Red but needs a re-spray as the lacquer is peeling in many places. The underbody is very good though, and there is no rust on the car”.

Andy has been very honest about the Porsche’s exterior and that is backed up by the photos in our Gallery below. The 911 can certainly be run as is, but the next owner may wish to invest in a re-spray to reset/refresh this car’s aesthetics.

“The alloy wheels on the car are in very good condition and are original equipment, with new tyres fitted. A second set of Porsche alloys are available for negotiation after the sale of the car. These are in a similar excellent condition and are fitted with barely used Continental tyres. 205/50-17 front and  255/40-17 rear They are at least 18 years old but have been dry-stored and didn’t looked cracked anywhere when I last moved them.

“The hood was new back in 2007 but is still in very serviceable condition, the window has splits in it due to being lowered in cold weather. This can be easily replaced, though”. As such you will find gaffer tape repairs in-situ, so as Andy intimates it’s time for the window to be replaced.

Supplied with the car are new door and window seals, stainless-steel sill covers, a rear wing support tube, a quarter tonneau cover and a full tonneau cover – the latter having never been fitted. A winter cover is also supplied, as are various service spares.

Interior

“The interior is poor with the seams split on both dark brown leather seats and needs re-trimming.”. Again, honesty is the order of the day.

If you wish to run the 911 as is, then a rat-rod aesthetic is where it’s at. Again, if the next owner invests in a total refresh, then this will be a car transformed.

The leather seat splits are clear, although the rears remain in pretty good nick; carpets aren’t too shabby, with footwell mats retaining reasonably good piles. Up top, it’s clear that the roof is in reasonable condition as the interior panels remain in good nick.

Mechanical

Andy has already mentioned some of the work carried out on the 911, above. However, it’s worth listing all works here so potential bidders can get a full picture of the preventative maintenance carried out:
•    2006: steering column bush replaced, reconditioned brake calipers, new pads and lines fitted.
•    2007: new hood
•    2008: new engine sensors and bracket; front to rear oil pipes (both flexible and rigid)
•    2013 - 2019: VOR on SORN
•    2015: gearbox rebuild, new clutch, used s/s exhaust, engine ‘tinware’ replaced, new CV joints and bolts, gear linkage bushes and engine bulkhead sound insulation panel
•    2016: suspension bushes replaced and new oil cooler
•    2017: new discs all round, “kidney bowls” repaired
•    2019: brake repair kit (hoses, pipes, sensors, cables, brake shields, pads, etc) applied, new blower motor and oil tank hose
•    2020: new tyres, short-shift kit, roll bar bushes and odometer gear.

“The car is mechanically sound. Everything works perfectly, except for the headlamp washers. However, there is a replacement pump in a box of bits that’ll come with the car. The 12-CD changer isn’t functioning, although it did a few years ago and the driver’s door speaker stopped working on the drive to Bonhams (possibly a wire that’s worked its way loose).
“I haven’t used the heater for years but did put a new blower motor in it; I assume it’s still working okay but didn’t test it on the drive as the weather was so hot”.

A large selection of invoices for parts and maintenance works carried out is also present, as are expired MoT test certificates and a model-specific Haynes manual. Further maintenance details and another workshop manual are also on a memory stick.

Summary

As consignor Fraser Jackson intimates, this is a light project based on a structurally and mechanically sound car (the all-important ‘Kidney Bowls’ have been restored! The 911 has been well-maintained and drives beautifully.

It can quite easily be used as is. That way, you’re never going to worry about parking it in the local Tesco or pub car park – hey, what’s a small ding on bodywork with a bit of peeling lacquer. It’s a car that can be enjoyed immediately.

That said, equally the next owner can go to town on it. Factor in a full re-spray and interior re-trim and hey presto, this will be a Cabriolet transformed.

The choice is theirs or should that be, yours!
