Paul's review

Paul Hegarty - Consignment Specialist Message Paul

“ A well maintained, low mileage example, with brakes and clutch recently replaced. ”

A stunning looking wide-body 997, in great condition, with significant recent maintenance, only 40,000 miles and in a rare but very appealing colour scheme. A perfect convertible for our late summer and with all-wheel drive, it will be equally well suited for when winter arrives. The best of both worlds!

Background

When the 997 first broke cover it was greeted with loud sighs of relief from Porsche fanatics.

The 996 had somewhat annoyed the 911 stalwarts with its ‘fried egg’ headlights and general similarity to the ‘lesser’ Boxster.

The 997 reverted to the ‘bug eye’ appearance of the 993 and classic 911s.

Looks aside, the 997 bristled with new technology, evolved chassis dynamics and enhanced engine performance, making the 997 generation a driver’s favourite once more.

For the C4S - such as the Cabriolet example we have here - the standard 3.6-litre engine was enlarged to 3.8-litres, the rear haunches widened (as per the C4S model tradition) and all-wheel-drive was fitted, making this a fantastically capable car.

So good was the 997 C4S that Evo magazine gave it a five-star rating when new, calling it a “GT3 that has been to finishing school” and stating that the driving experience was “phenomenal… on the right road it’s devastating!”

Overview

This car has 40,036 miles under its belt.

On the occasion of its 2017 MoT it had covered 37,017 miles so, as you can see, it’s been used sparingly in recent years.

The car’s exterior is ‘Basalt Black Metallic’ with a black fabric roof.

The interior is ‘Terracotta’ leather with black carpets and trim.

The vendor, who is only the second owner, bought the car early in 2011.

He also tells us that the unmarked wheels were refurbished 2 years ago, and that the matching Pirelli P-Zero tyres have around 3,000 miles of use.

Over the course of the last 5,000 miles he has changed the gearbox, the clutch, the brakes (pads and discs), replaced all the hoses and fixed a very small hole in the A/C.

We’ve taken the car for a spin around some Oxfordshire country lanes and can report that it feels very well screwed together and has all the power, rapidity, balance, poise and grip you would expect from one of these fabulous cars.

Nothing rattles, clunks, squeaks or shakes.

Everything opens and shuts with the Teutonic weight and precision we’ve long come to expect of Zuffenhausen products.

It seems to us to be a very well-preserved example of both the marque and the model.

Exterior

The bodywork is in good condition and there are no dents, creases or dinks of any significance to report anywhere that we can see.

The shut-lines and panel gaps are as crisp, even and consistent as you would hope and wish to find.

The black paintwork is fine and has retained a good deal of lustre and shine.

There are a few stone chips and light scuffs on the bonnet. Elsewhere, (the forward-facing rear wheel arches, for example), any stone chips have been caught by the protective film put there for that that precise purpose.

As far as we can see, the wheels, which were professionally refurbished relatively recently, are free from evidence of encounters with kerbs or other potential providers of roadside jeopardy.

The matching Pirelli P-Zeros tyres look to have plenty of life left in them.

There is detached plastic shroud loose inside the void in the front valance beneath the number plate.

The black fabric roof goes up and down in exact and timely accordance with your requests and is in very good condition, save for a small stain and a couple of minor scuffs.

There are some scratches on the nearside headlamp cowling and a couple of scuffs on the metal strip around the base of the hood recess at the rear.

A little bit of rubber trim is lifting up on the nearside of the windscreen.

The badging, trim and other exterior fixtures and fittings are all perfectly decent.

Interior

It’s much the same story of good condition on the inside, which in our opinion is rendered all the more attractive by the warm and inviting tones of the ‘Terracotta’ leather.

Aside from a couple of scuffs on the squab of the o/s/r seat and on the side bolsters of the front seats, the upholstery is in good condition and is far more a reflection of the car’s low mileage than its age.

The seats are supportive, comfortable and functional.

The door cards, carpets and mats are all very good, as is the roof lining.

There are some light signs of wear on the leather trim to the gear lever and the handbrake.

The dashboard, centre console, steering wheel and controls are all good.

When we drove the car, warning lights for the PSM and tyre pressure sensor systems illuminated initially and then turned off.

The ‘frunk’ is in fine fettle.

Mechanical

The engine bay looks clean, dry and everything appears to be in its right and proper place, although it’s a 911, so you can only see about 5% of the engine.

The undersides of the car seem to have plenty of structural integrity.

History

The car’s MoT is valid until 2.12.23.

It comes with all handbooks, manuals, keys, a clear HPI check and various bills, invoices and receipts attesting to a life well curated and a good history of servicing and maintenance. The vendor has recently fitted a new battery.

The vendor is currently trying to dig up some more service history. We’ll keep you posted.

Only one of the car’s two keys (the grey one) seems to have any functionality at present.

Summary

There are lots of good reasons why the 997 4S was generally received with plaudits and adulation.

These are seriously good cars.

And this particular car seems to us to be a well-sorted example of the model and in possession of plenty of mechanical integrity.

We’re confident to offer this splendid vehicle for auction with an estimate of £35,000 - £40,000.
