Background

The Porsche 911 first broke cover in 1963, morphing over the years from the svelte, elfin Audrey Hepburn of the sportscar world into the current swollen-hipped, muscular Serena Williams-esque ballistic bruiser beloved of city traders, nouveau riche entrepreneurs, and mid-life crisis divorcees.

While the early cars were slow and fragile, the later cars are very fast and almost indestructible, which makes them the model of choice for the discerning enthusiast who cares for about driving than polishing.

While the 996 of 1997 onwards is the first of what many consider to be the ‘new’ 911 it is also the first of the water-cooled models, which leads many to deride it as not being a ‘proper’ 911. This is, of course, utter nonsense.

But, the fact remains that the market doesn’t value them as highly as either the older or the newer models like the 997 you see here. By the time the 997 arrived Porsche had got its eye after eight years of water cooled production, rattling out the hugely powerful and efficient new engines by the tens of thousands.

The base model Carrera is a great introduction to the range but the Carrera S with a larger engine, more power, and a sports suspension and exhaust, marked a new marketing strategy for Porsche, one based on trying to move buyers up from the base model whenever possible.

Overview

This delightful Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Gen 1 was delivered to its first owner on the 1st March 2008 by The Porsche Centre Bristol.

Finished in Slate Grey Metallic with a black leather interior and 911 Turbo wheels from the factory, this is a 911 that’s as subtle as it is well preserved. With a very good maintenance record and running well.

This is your chance to get your hands on a very good example of one of the most underrated cars in the Porsche canon.

Exterior

Porsche’s reputation for putting their cars together with an uncommon degree of diligence is on full display here; even after a decade and a half and circa. 55,500 miles, this one still looks like a five-year-old.

Tight and consistent panel gaps are backed up by ripple-free flanks and a complete absence of the sort of dents, dinks and scrapes that would betray a more careless owner.

The factory 911 Turbo wheels, code 404 and which were fitted to the car as an optional extra when it was new, are also in an excellent condition - and they’re fitted with matching Bridgestone Potenza tyres.

The metal sunroof opens and closes as it should too, sealing tightly against the elements. The rear spoiler deploys on command as well; there to help pin you to the tarmac when needed and discreetly tucked away when not, it’s the perfect compromise for a stealth sportscar like this.

Taken in conjunction with the very good paintwork, this is a sportscar with only good things to say about its curation.

Interior

Fitted with the optional and highly supportive 16-way adaptive and heated sports seats, the interior is in a very good condition; the interior of the 997 has a well-earned reputation for longevity and this example lives up to that.

Speaking of being easy to live with, the bank of white-faced dials are a model of clarity, while the ergonomics of the controls are a million miles from that of previous generations; this is a 911 that is as user-friendly as any family hatchback.

The carpets, headlining, and door cards are all good.

Other options include rain-sensing wipers, the Sport Chrono dial on the dashboard, and Bose speakers.

The frunk is clean and tidy and well organised.

It’s so good in there that we can’t see anything that needs doing – but don’t just take our word for it; please contact us to make an appointment to come and see it for yourself.

Mechanical

As you can see, it starts promptly with no warning lights and ticks over and revs as it should. It shows good oil pressure too, and the vendor tells us that it’s “a lovely car to drive, just great”.

The engine bay is nicely presented and while the underside does have some surface corrosion on a few fasteners and components, it seems to be limited in scope, largely cosmetic in nature and so should be easy to remedy.

Certainly, no MoT tester has ever mentioned underbody corrosion in the car’s testing history.

History

As you’d expect, the 911’s service history reads very well:

  • 10.08.2022 and 53,958 miles – service by Mole Valley Specialist Cars Ltd
  • 14.07.2020 and 50,347 miles – service and miscellaneous fettling by The Porsche Centre Sutton Coldfield at a cost of £3,900
  • 30.04.2019 and 48,729 miles – new front brake discs and pads by The Porsche Centre Reading
  • 22.06.2016 and 45,031 miles – service by The Porsche Centre Wolverhampton
  • 03.11.2015 and 43,706 miles – new spark plugs and check by The Porsche Centre Sutton Coldfield
  • 09.06.2014 and 32,814 miles – service by The Porsche Centre West London
  • 06.07.2012 and 13,728 miles – service by The Porsche Centre Bristol
  • 13.02.2012 and 12,130 miles – service by 911 Sport of Horncastle
  • 10.02.2010 and 6,093 miles – service by The Porsche Centre Bristol

The Porsche’s MoT certificate is valid until August 2025. It was gained, like many of the previous ones, with no advisories.

The Porsche comes with its book pack and two sets of keys, we did notice one of the keys is not working, so might need a battery replacing.

Summary

The Porsche 911 has long been a favourite for petrolheads like us. It’s fast and handles beautifully. It’s also reliable and comfortable and very easy to live with. Servicing isn’t expensive and specialists to look after and modify it are plentiful. The parts supply is good and there’s almost certainly going to be a ready market for yours when the time comes to sell.

All of this means there are few easier or safer ways to spend the £30,000 to £35,000 we think this one will fetch. And, given the market for good ones – and this is definitely a good one – you can probably view this as a deposit rather than an outlay because few cars have the residuals of a Porsche 911.

Exciting, isn’t it?
