Mark Livesey - Consignment Specialist Message Mark

“ One owner for the past 23 years. Lady seller wants good home for it. ”

Significant documented history showing very well maintained by Porsche specialist, no expense spared. The seller has the original alloys, and they are included in the sale.

Background

The Porsche 911 first broke cover in 1963 and evolved over the years from a rather slender and spartan engineering oddity to the pumped-up, high-tech ballistic missiles that now carry the name and number.

Although the Porsche 911 has been constantly evolving ever since its launch, perhaps the biggest change came with the move from air (technically, it’s oil cooling, but never mind) to water cooling in 1997 - a move which has divided the Porsche community ever since.

With that fundamental change the 993 was forever set in stone as the last of the air-cooled 911s and, consequently, decent examples have been gaining in value accordingly.

And not just because of the air-cooled thing: the 993 was far and away the best 911 to date at its launch, marrying the spirit and DNA of the original 911 with far superior (and more forgiving) suspension geometry and handling dynamics.

911s before the advent of the 993 could, on occasion, and invariably without asking your permission, suddenly abandon all hope of traction and hurl you through the nearest hedge at an appalling velocity.

The 993 and the 911s that came after it would only do this if they were being driven by idiots.

If you’re looking for a modern, appreciating, classic example of the 911 then the 993 is undoubtedly the sweet spot.

Svelte, muscular looks, plenty of power, far more predictable handling than the earlier cars and, of course, last-of-breed rarity status make the model, and this very fine Cabriolet example, rightly something to value and desire.

Overview

This 1995 993 Cabriolet is being sold by a vendor whose late husband bought the car in 2000.

It has always had a place at the heart of life on the family farm and, indeed, it served with distinction on the couple’s wedding day and honeymoon.

The vendor, who is known to us at Bonhams|Cars Online, has spent the best part of £30,000 getting the car back into the excellent condition you see today.

Why?

Because she wanted to do the right thing by a car that had meant so much to her and her husband.

We think that’s a pretty noble sentiment and an entirely commendable motive.

So, since 2018, the car has been stripped and resprayed, and all and any components that needed refurbishing or replacing have been dutifully refurbished or replaced.

The engine, gearbox, wheels, brakes, clutch and other mechanicals have been checked and overhauled as appropriate.

The fabric roof is brand-new.

The front seats and steering wheel have been removed, refurbished and re-installed.

The result is a 911 Cabriolet that looks really very good indeed, and certainly far better than you could reasonably demand of a car of this age and mileage.

Incidentally, we’re of the opinion than in a car this well-built, with a service history this complete, a 100K+ mileage really doesn’t matter.

Certainly, our friends in Europe or the USA, where continental scale means people have to drive further to get anywhere, don’t regard mileages like this with the same irrational suspicion as we do in the UK.

We have driven it and can attest to its excellent poise, balance, roadholding and ability to press on with enthusiasm.

It feels as solid and properly screwed-together as you would hope and expect of one of Zuffenhausen’s finest.

Yes, it’s got some wear and tear on the inside in places, but it’s nothing that some decent cleaning/detailing products and elbow-grease couldn’t rectify without too much effort.

Exterior

The bodywork is untroubled by any dinks or dents of significance anywhere that we can see and the paintwork, unsurprisingly, looks pretty much brand-new in its quality of lustre and shine.

The shut lines and gaps are impressively crisp, consistent and Teutonic.

The wheels are very good, as are the matching Continental tyres.

The hood fits sweetly and is in as-new condition.

It comes with a wind deflector and a tonneau cover (which you’ll find, together with an overall car cover, in the clean and undamaged ‘frunk’).

The car’s badging, lights, lenses and other exterior fixtures and fittings are all good.

If it was our choice, we’d get the chrome exhaust tips refurbished or replaced, as they’re rather foxed and pitted now.

Interior

The blue leather interior is in decent condition and broadly reflects the car’s age and mileage.

The newly cleaned and fed front seats and steering wheel look very fresh and ready for the next few decades.

The carpets and mats are very reasonable and the hood lining is in fine fettle.

There are a few marks on the rear seats and some scuffs in evidence on the leather on the door cards, above and below the dashboard, and on the transmission tunnel.

Some of the rubber trim is a little ragged in places, but there’s nothing that couldn’t be rectified pretty easily.

The steering wheel, handbrake and gear lever are all in good order.

We didn’t flick every switch, press every button or twiddle every knob, but those we did flick, press and twiddle responded faithfully to our instructions.

It even comes with a delightfully of-its-period Nokia mobile (the one that folds out to reveal a keyboard) which just needs a SIM card to get going again.

Mechanical

The engine and engine bay look very clean and dry. Everything appears to be in its right and proper place.

The undersides of the car look to have plenty of structural integrity.

History

This splendid car comes with lots of history and plenty of bills, receipts and invoices covering work done to it over the years.

It has been the grateful recipient of an expensive mechanical and aesthetic refurbishment that’s given it a valuable and richly deserved new lease of life.

It has a service book full of main dealer and specialist stamps, many of which are from the renowned firm of Porsche whisperers, Autofarm.

Where there are gaps, the car has been in storage or under SORN conditions.

Throughout its life it has been worked on by marque specialists, supplied with high-quality parts, and fettled, trimmed, tweaked and prepared by highly respected professionals in their chosen fields.

The car comes with a current V5, a clear HPI check and an MoT that’s valid until 16.1.24.

Summary

Despite the fact that it’s covered no more than 10,000 miles in the last 13 years, this car has had a great deal of time, money and affection lavished on it in recent times because of its special status as a much-loved family friend.

All the heavy-lifting has been done by other people – so you don’t have to.

We like it a good deal and feel very confident that it’s got years of high-quality motoring pleasure to give to its next fortunate owner.

We are happy to offer this vehicle for auction with an estimate in the range of £30,000 - £35,000.
