Background

There comes a time in car enthusiast’s life when thoughts turn to owning a Porsche 911. But where to start when there are so many variants available? Of course, your friendly local dealer is ready, willing and able to relieve you of a large wad of cash for a brand new 911, but there is another way. A classic…

The 911 (964) is one of the best places to start. Manufactured and sold between 1989 and 1994, the car was designed by Benjamin Dimson. Well done that man! It featured significant styling revisions over previous 911s, most noticeable the more integrated bumpers.

The 964 was also the first car to be offered with Porsche’s Tiptronic automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as options.

We are told the 964 was considered to be 85% new compared to its predecessor and there was plenty of choice with not only both rear and all-wheel drive models, but also three different body styles – coupe, Targa or Cabriolet.

A new 3.6-litre powerhouse of an engine was fitted, flat-6 and air-cooled of course. Figures taken at launch suggest that top speed was a heady 160mph and that all-important 0-60mph sprint would take around six seconds, model dependant. These figures still look impressive even today.

The suspension was substantially altered with coil springs and shock absorbers replacing torsion bars – how very modern!

A new electric rear spoiler was fitted, rising to attention at speeds north of 50mph, falling back when plodding along at more urban speeds.

The rarest of all is the convertible, and guess what, that is what we are lucky enough to be offering for sale. So, if you fancy a little alfresco Porsche motoring, read on for all the details.

Overview

Picture the scene, in the depths of winter, January 1993, when one lucky individual took delivery of this 911 Carrera Cabriolet. Madness, or inspired? However, being a C4 meant that power was sent to all four wheels, so all-year round traction would not be a problem. We are sure there would have been some roof-down winter drives.

At two years old, the car passed into the care of its long-term owner and at the first MoT in 1996, the 911 had covered 33,156 miles. Over the next 25 years or so, this has little more than doubled. Sparing (and caring) use.

Being a later car, the more powerful 3.6-litre engine lies under the rear bonnet, and we can report it had a top end rebuild in 2014, with few miles covered since.

There’s plenty of history too, which is important when buying any 911. Buy the wrong car and it will come back and bite you, buy the right car and it will delight you!

Beautifully original, and freshly MoTed, this lovely Cabriolet is offered just in time for summer.

Exterior

So many Porsches seem to be specified in rather sombre silvers and greys, and let’s face it, if you buy a convertible Porsche surely you want to get noticed? The delightful greeny blue of this 911 is really rather special and looks even better in the flesh than our many pictures show.

It’s paired with a black soft top, which looks to be in good condition, save for some scratches on the rear plastic window. Some of these may polish out. When folded away, a tonneau cover neatens everything up rather nicely.

Porsche builds their cars properly and therefore it is no surprise to see neat shut lines and hear doors that sound with a reassuring thunk!

The paintwork positively sparkles, and we suspect is completely original. That being the case, you will find stone chips in the paint, most noticeable at the front and on the wheel arches. We like originality, though some may beg to differ. Take some time to examine the pictures or better still come and inspect the car in person.

The five spoke alloy wheels fill the arches rather well and are in good order. A complete new set of Landsail tyres was fitted in 2015 and still boast almost maximum tread. We always like to see matching tyres fitted to performance cars, as to our mind this shows careful and considered ownership.

Interior

The white leather interior of the 911 was a popular option and pairs nicely with the exterior hue. The front seats are electrically powered and show remarkably little sign of wear. The driver’s seat has a little wear to the offside bolster, but the rest of the seats look as though they have hardly been sat in

The rear seats are ideal for children we would suggest or adults for the very shortest of journeys. Most people fold them flat and use the space as an overflow for luggage.

Carpets are in good condition, but they are just a tad grubby in the driver’s footwell. A steam clean should rejuvenate them nicely.

The black dashboard is in good order and unlike previous generations of 911, there is some resemblance of order with the switchgear.

A Sony CD unit provides the aural entertainment.

The driving position is great and the view out one of the very best. That view of course gets better with the roof stowed and then the lovely sound of that flat six engine can be enjoyed even more. Perfect!

The front boot is nicely carpeted, reasonably commodious and houses a space saver spare wheel. A CTEK maintenance battery charger is included in the sale, ideal if the car is to be left undriven for long periods of time.

Mechanical

We always include a raft of photographs of a car’s underside and that is exactly the case here. Other than the expected surface dirt, we are mightily impressed. As is so often the case with convertible cars, they are often put away into winter hibernation which saves them from the ravages of salty and wet roads.

The engine compartment too looks to be in decent nick with no signs of anything untoward. History here is paramount as these engines do need proper care and maintenance to function properly. From what we can tell, this motor has been cared for and when the roof is down, the roads empty, that wonderful flat six sound can be really enjoyed.

History

Our picture section includes copies of the 911’s paperwork. There are plenty of invoices from the car’s early days, as well as a raft of MoT certificates which help corroborate the car’s modest recorded mileage.

The last test was carried out on 7th May 2022, with an immediate pass with no advisories. Prior to that, it was tested in 2016 and we note the three minor advisories recorded them appear to have been rectified.

Other immediate history includes the previously mentioned set of new tyres in 2015 (mileage 69,957) and a new battery the same year.

At the same time as this year’s MoT, a new fuel pump was fitted as well as another new battery.

However, the most important work was the engine top end rebuild in 2014. This was carried out by Porsche specialist Unit Eleven in Warrington.

They did the rebuild, with including the reconditioning of the cylinder heads and the fitting of new piston rings, studs, gaskets etc.

Sensibly, the clutch was changed at the same time.

Also carried out was the fitment of a reconditioned steering rack.

Total cost for all the work, £6,435.46.

Summary

This is a properly cared for and cherished 911. Presented in an attractive colour combination and with an excellent specification, this is a car to buy with both the head and the heart.

Lower the roof, fire up that sonorous motor and go! Head-turning looks, an excellent turn of speed and reasonable mid-20s economy are the order of the day.

The manual gearbox is undoubtedly the enthusiast’s choice and with all-wheel drive, this 911 need not be confined to the garage in the winter, excellent traction being available whatever the weather.

So, if you want to catch the rays of sunshine in appreciating classic, then may we suggest placing a bid without delay.

We estimate the car will sell for between £41,000 and £51,000.
