“ Highly Capable and Successful Midget ”

This example must represent the ultimate expression of competition Midgets with its fully modified and no expense spared specification

Background

The MG Midget is a historic MG model designation dating right back to the MG Midget M-type of 1928. Inevitably, today, the Midget name is most readily associated with the youngest Midget model, the lightweight two-seater sports car launched in 1961. This model was essentially a badge engineered version of the Austin Healey Sprite (or “frogeye” Sprite) which BMC had launched in 1958. Conceived by the Donald Healey Motor Company and produced by the MG plant in Abingdon, the Sprite was designed to be a low-cost entry point to enduring sports car ownership.

An unintended consequence of the Sprite’s arrival was the exodus of many previous MG owners over to the Sprite in the absence of an MG alternative. That predicament was easily solved, however, and with the launch of the MKII Sprite in 1961 came the MG Midget. The Midget was mechanically identical to the Sprite (now bereft of its frogeyes) but boasted a number of “refinements” to help justify its higher price. These included a revised grille design, upgraded interior fittings, better instruments and a splash of added external polished metal.

With their low weight, modest cost and relative ubiquity, both Midgets and Sprites were ideal candidates for a range of motorsport endeavours and activities. The MG factory positively encouraged this trend by producing three special Midgets with a GT configuration and an aerodynamically enhanced front end. The cars were fitted with 979 cc A-series engines with twin Webers and produced approximately 80 hp. Two of the three cars were loaned to garage owner and MG racer Dick Jacobs who successfully campaigned them in Formula Junior events.

From then on Midgets and Sprites (often colloquially termed “Spridgets”) became regular fixtures at hill climbs, circuits and autotest venues the world over. Specialist events even started to spring up such as the MGCC Midget & Sprite Challenge founded in 1977 and still running today.

Overview

This Modsports MG Midget is based around a 1962 Midget with the original tub still in place. That aside just about everything else on this powerhouse MG has been changed and uprated with motorsport in mind.

We know that the Midget found its way into the hands of Ian Woodside in the 1990’s. Ian was one of three sets of brothers who had dominated Northern Irish rallying in the 1960’s and beyond – the Boyds, the McCartneys and the Woodsides. In 1963 Ian Woodside won the Circuit of Ireland in another MG Midget. He also competed Midgets in numerous hill climbs, sprints and the like. Woodside converted this Midget to its current 2.1L Vauxhall engine configuration and had a number of successes campaigning it. Another Northern Irish racer later acquired and campaigned the car in hill climbs, sprints and on circuits. Will Corry of Corry Motorsport had numerous successes behind the wheel of this Midget.

At the end of 2020 Loaded Gunn Racing of Chippenham undertook a full rebuild of this competition MG. Work included the fitting of a lightweight front end and revised aero', a new, better radiator and oil cooler and numerous improvements over the original hill climb specification. This work, combined with a rebuild of the 2.1L Vauxhall “red top” engine by Swindon Racing Engines lends this diminutive racer great, useable power and torque (more of which later). Since this time the MG has had just two outings, securing a 3rd at a Special GT race at Castle Combe and participating in a CSCC Modsports race at Brands Hatch.

As of today, the Midget stands eligible for CSCC Modsports & Special Saloons competitions, numerous UK or continental sprints and hillclimbs, track days or is ripe for conversion back to Class A Midget/Sprite Challenge specification. In any event this is a highly specified competition car with a proven pedigree ready to go racing.

Exterior

Despite all the competition modifications, our car is recognisably an MG Midget. That happy looking “face” and the instantly recognisable rear light clusters do the heavy lifting in this respect, of course. That special, lightweight frontend sports a pronounced shelf spoiler at its chin as well as numerous muscular looking bulges to accommodate that 2.1L Vauxhall engine. A big cutout helps ensure sufficient airflow reaches that 2020 Setrab uprated radiator.

The rear aspect of the car is mainly cut away to accommodate the huge stainless-steel silencer. Beneath this sits a big ground effect diffuser which works with the flat floor to promote a Bernoulli effect to help keep the Midget firmly planted on the asphalt. Just those signature taillights remain as a homage to the original car.

From the sides the flared arches dominate, thus shaped to help protect the four spoked, deep rimmed new Revolution race wheels. These are currently fitted with Avon slicks that have seen service on just two outings. Owner John also reports that two further sets of Revolution wheels are included – one set fitted with Kumho road legal cut slicks and the other with wets.

The cabin and its valuable cargo are protected by a high-specification tubular roll-cage complete with numerous scrutineering stickers attesting to its validity. The passenger position is covered by a permanent vinyl tonneau cover and a vestigial aeroscreen provides some protection for the driver. The mandatory electrical cut-offs, reinforced towing eye and quick release catches all appear present and correct.

Interior

Somewhat unsurprisingly the interior of the Midget is focused on one thing and one thing only – going fast. As such it is a stripped back and business-like affair. Instrumentation is limited to a Racetech 8,000 rpm rev counter and a duplex oil pressure / water temperature gauge. The usual kill switches, cutoffs and externally mounted fuses are noted.

Seating is courtesy of a fibreglass bucket seat with accredited Sabelt harnesses. A Lifeline 360 plumbed-in fire extinguisher is also fitted.

Mechanical

What the “Inside” section lacks in substance, we hope to fully make up for here, as herein lies the true essence of the machine! The 2.1L, 16-valve double overhead camshaft engine has been previously fully rebuilt by Swindon Racing Engines and fitted with twin Weber 48 IDA 4/R carburettors. This dry-sump, red-top engine is said to deliver “great, usable power and torque.” Luckily, thanks to the dyno at Stanton Motorsport we are able to quantify that for you. In 2021 the Midget was producing a shade over 200bhp at 7,200rpm. The torque curve was impressively flat starting at around 135 lb-ft at 3,700rpm before peaking at 165 Ib-ft at 5,250rpm whilst still holding over 150 Ib-ft at 7,000rpm.

This power and torque are distributed via a four speed RS2000 transmission with a Tran-X gear kit to a five- link Escort 'English' rear axle with Tran X plate limited slip differential. Braking is catered for by four-pot AP callipers at the front and two-pot versions at the rear. Beneath the Midget lurks a sophisticated and fully adjustable coilover suspension which is inboard at the front. Electric power steering is fitted together with an Odyssey Extreme lightweight racing battery and a 25-litre alloy fuel tank.

Removing the lightweight clamshell reveals an engine bay which is every bit as focussed as the cockpit. Heavy duty welded alloys and high pressure braided hoses are the order of the day, here. Many of the components detailed above can be seen in here and in the underside shots of the car. With competition cars of this nature that regularly undergo maintenance, upgrades and race scrutineering the condition is invariably exemplary, as we see here.

History

Not too much to report here other than that dyno printout from 2021 mapping power, torque and fuelling. We are confident that owner John holds the necessary competition paperwork associated with the Midget and confirming eligibility for the classes stated.

Summary

Midget by name and midget by nature. By today’s overblown standard the MG Midget really is small. This compact footprint and associated lightweight were two of the key attributes that endeared the Midgets and Sprites so comprehensively to the racing fraternity. Stir into that recipe strong availability of parts and upgrades and relative low costs and you can see why the MG Midget boasts such a proud competition history and heritage.

This example must represent the ultimate expression of competition Midgets with its fully modified and no expense spared specification. The original MK1 Midget had a kerb weight of around 735kgs so even if this one weighs in at more due to its bigger engine and safety accoutrements it is still likely to be delivering a power to weight ratio of over 200bhp / tonne. Impressive! Those who know their competition cars will immediately appreciate the strength in depth of this car’s specification. For those looking to race and win, and soon, then this Midget could very easily be the perfect companion.

We are happy to offer this car for auction with an estimate in the range of £12,000 - £18,000.
