1965 MG Midget

This particular Mk2 Midget was first registered on the 12th March 1965. It was acquired by the current owner, a semi-retired motor mechanic, from the wife of the first owner in March 1989 and has been used very sparingly ever since.

The current owner, who is now 80 years old, passed custodianship of the Midget to his son last year. He carried out a recommissioning of the car, taking it out for high day and holiday trips. His family have now decided that after 35 years, it is time for the plucky MG Midget to find a new home.

This Mk2 Midget is finished in classic MG British Racing Green and is believed to be largely original and untouched.

The Midget wears its ages very well with some scratches and chips noted here and there on the paint.

On the bonnet the clear coat is starting to go. The owners son informed us that it is believed that the bonnet and passenger wing were repainted after they were damaged whilst in the first owners home garage. The story goes that repairs were being made to the garage roof and something fell through on to the car. It was subsequently repaired which suggests a repaint of the bonnet and wing.

The Midgets panels appear nice and straight with the doors closing with a satisfying thud. The convertibles chrome work is also very good with a lovely shine from the bumpers and the rest of its chrome accessories. The cars side trim strips are also nice and straight with no dings evident.

There is rust present on the ends of the sills, with a hole visible on the front end of the passenger side outer sill. The owners son informed us that he treated these areas with waxoil and added that he hesitated repairing it right away as he wanted to preserve the Midgets untouched patina. These blemishes don’t detract from the cars character and it should be possible to have these areas sympathetically repaired and blended with the original paint.

The convertible hood and its removable frame is with the car and has been stored in its carry bag for some time. The roof has not been on the car in many years and the rear screen has gone milky with age. A careful restoration should return the hood to its former glory. The Midget’s tonneau cover is also present, is in good condition and fits the car well.

The owners son also adds that he had the wheels stripped and powder coated last year and installed new dish hubcaps. New Continental tyres were also fitted at the time.

The interior of this 1965 MG Midget presents very well and is in great condition all round. The black vinyl seats with white piping are nice and clean with only minimal signs of use. On the passenger seat there is a seam with has burst its stitches but it doesn’t look like it should be a difficult repair. A small nick is also noted on the bottom area of the drivers door card. However the rest of the door cards are in nice shape.

The simple yet attractive dashboard is also very nice, with all the gauges clean and in good condition. The MG “Banjo” style steering wheel really suits the Midget’s sports car looks, with the MG badge sitting proudly in the centre.

A set of black carpets complete the interior and these too are in very nice condition with only minimal signs of wear and use. The rubber foot pedals are also in very nice shape.

The owners son states that all the gauges and switches work as they should.

Under the bonnet resides the fiesty 1098cc A-Series engine which produces 59BHP.

The engine bay of this Mk2 Midget is in largely original condition and clearly hasn’t been messed with. It has a nice patina to it and has not been detailed or restored.

The owners son informed us that when he recommissioned the car last year, he rebuilt the twin SU carburettors, the brake master cylinder and fitted a new fuel pump. He also fitted new HT leads along with a new distributor cap, rotor arm and spark plugs. A new bonnet release cable was also fitted. The engine was serviced at this time. The twin pot air cleaners were off the car during the photoshoot but they are included and are shown in the photo gallery below.

Other parts fitted were two new front brake calipers and two new rear wheel cylinders. New brake hoses were also installed.

The underside presents in largely original condition with the factory underseal still present. The owners son adds that some of the underseal was lifting and flaking off so he removed these spots and treated the areas with waxoil.

The owner states that the Midget runs and drives very well and is a lot of fun on twisty roads. We can confirm it started on the button, with the little sports car idling very nicely as it moved around during the photoshoot.

Little history comes with the car but there are some recent invoices for the recommissioning carried out last year. There are also a number of old MOT certificates and some old tax discs.

What we do know is that the current owner acquired the MG Midget from a Mrs Hastings in 1989. We believe she became the cars 2nd owner in 1985 after her husband passed away. He used to take the Midget to the current owners garage in Barnet for servicing and maintenance. When Mrs Hastings decided to sell the car the current owner decided to acquire it as he knew it well. It is said the Midget had covered approximately 7,000 miles at this stage.

Over the next few years the MG Midget was used on and off and the owners son remembers it being used by his father when he was a teenager. As is often the case with running your own business and raising a family, the Midget was used very sparingly and spent much of its time in storage. When the son took custodianship of the Midget last year it had covered approximately 12,000 miles and he has added over 400 miles since.

The MG Midget is a fantastic affordable classic convertible that offers buyers a great way to get into the classic car scene. They are a hoot to drive with great handling that truly delivers many smiles per mile. And thanks to excellent spares and club support, they are also cheap and easy to maintain. It is rare for such an original MG Midget to come to market, especially one with low owners and miles. After 35 years this 1965 MG Midget is ready for new adventures with its new owner.
