Paul's review

Paul Hegarty - Consignment Specialist Message Paul

“ There are MGB's and MGB's and then there is this one. Simply one of the nicest we have ever seen. ”

The perennially popular MGB is one of the stalwarts of the Classic car world, and its not difficult to see the appeal with an example like this. Pretty styling, nice handling and low running costs. What's not to like!?

Background

The MG B might have only been perceived as a fraction of the glamour and performance offered by some other British sports cars of the time, but its cheaper price, accessibility and huge potential ensured its rise to cult status around the world. Produced from 1962 to 1980, over half a million examples were sold with a huge US export market.

The 1800cc B series engine might not have knocked your socks off in terms of power and performance, but it was strong and easily worked on and good examples really showcase just how good a 4 cylinder naturally aspirated carb-fed motor can be.

Hugely versatile with variants and parts to mix and match to the driving style and conditions, the MG B is also backed up by a massive aftermarket support network meaning it’s a classic car that’s very easy to own. Whilst the lack of power might put some people off, they’ll almost certainly be people who haven’t driven a well sorted example, as with the right suspension set up, this car provides a great deal of fun allowing you to use all the power that it has.

Overview

This MG has been in the current owner’s care for the past 13 years and during that time the car has been loved and well looked after. The owner is now looking to sell this vehicle along with some others in their small collection. It comes with a good stack of history and documents bound and presented in a neat folder and one set of keys. It is in great condition overall and really needs to be seen to be appreciated.

Exterior

Pageant blue is the colour for this MG, and it must be one of the best colours for this car in our humble opinion. Highlighted by the chrome trim and converted chrome bumpers (the car originally came with the rubber bumpers) the colour really pops and gives the body design a modern look.

The car sits on recently new Mini-Lite style wheels with good condition tyres which are showing to have plenty of life left. The chrome trim previously mentioned is in good condition with little, if any, pitting or damage. Elsewhere on the exterior, the hood is a recently new item too and is taught and snugly fitting to the body whilst the folding mechanism is also in good order.

NOTE – the WSP 2 number plate will not be included in the sale.

Interior

The interior of this MG B is rather splendid. The beige leather upholstery is in fine condition, giving an almost new feel to the car inside. It is well-matched to the black accents around the cabin, and the interior of the MG is a very pleasant place to be. The Moto-Lita wood rimmed steering wheel adds the final piece of the retro puzzle and sets off the interior package nicely.

The dashboard is in good condition and holds all the dials and gauges you’d need to keep an eye on the vitals of the car. It looks to be in good condition too with no cracks, scuffs, or damage. This includes the centre console and the main touch points around the interior.

Mechanical

A 1798cc B-series engine powers the MG B Roadster and it’s a wonderfully simple and effective engine. Much like its A-Series counterpart, of Mini and Morris Minor fame, the B-Series was admirably reliable and eminently tuneable.

This unit looks to be in good health visually with minimal signs of fluid leaks, no split pipes, or exposed wires. The metalwork in the engine bay looks to be in good order with minimal signs of corrosion, damage, or missing paint.

Underneath, the car looks to be in reasonable condition. The underseal has done its job with only some very minor surface corrosion looking to be coming through. The major components all look to be in good working order with no signs for concern.

The battery regrettably, does not seem to be in the same state of health. We have had to use assistance to start the car, and it does not appear to hold charge. Not a major concern, but it is probably best to budget for a new one!!

History

The MG has a service history from the early 90s to the early 2000s. There are a few highlights including the invoice from the conversion to chrome bumpers and the fitting of the Moto-Lita steering wheel. There are lots of invoices for miscellaneous parts and one of the previous owners has even done an overview of the car’s specification and modifications when they purchased it in 2001.

The V5C is present, and the car comes with one set of keys and an owner's red leather-bound pack.

Summary

The MG B was a beloved British sports car since its debut, and it continues to be to this day. This example has clearly been loved and presents in good condition. It would be perfect for someone to put their mark on the car and enjoy it for what the car is.

We’d expect this car to make between £7,000 - £10,000.
