Background
The MG must have got something right with the B as it remained in production for 18 years from 1962 to 1980 with minimal changes to meet incoming legislation, mostly for the important American market. It was a simple formula, a pretty two door GT sports car body with basic but reliable mechanics. MG used the tried and tested 1.8 B series engine fitted with twin carbs and driving the rear wheels through a four speed manual gearbox with optional overdrive, disk brakes up front and drums and leaf springs in the back. This made for a car that looked glamorous and drove well but was easy and cheap to maintain, its no wonder the B became Britain’s favourite sports car, still in demand when the last cars rolled of the Abingdon production line. As a classic today they make perfect sense for the same reasons as when new, the long bonnet GT style has aged perfectly and with about the best support of any classic - even the owners club remanufacture most parts - keeping one on the road is a doddle, and being a hatchback its even practical!
