Background
Mercedes-Benz produced the W123 range of cars from November 1975 to January 1986.
Over 2.7 million W123 units were sold before production finally ended in January 1986.
For Mercedes, the unmatched success of the 123 models owed everything to the impeccable build quality and reliability of these magnificently over-engineered cars.
Many went on to have two or three distinct phases of life.
They would be bought new for their capability, prestige and associated status.
In later life they would serve as taxis in Europe, often clocking upwards of 750,000 kilometres in the process.
Then, when lesser cars had long since turned to dust, succumbed to mechanical failure or just died of old age, they would go off to Africa, South America or the Far East, where their tank-like ruggedness and mechanical integrity meant that they could trundle on for many more years, seemingly oblivious to dust, heat and even the roughest of roads.
The car we are showing you now is almost certainly the best and most original example of the model we have ever seen.
