Overview

These motors were fitted to Maserati’s Grand Prix cars and led to the marque winning 8 Grand Prix between 1954 and 1960. The same motor also brought Maserati an F1 World Championship in 1957 partly thanks to driving from racing legend, Juan Manuel Fangio.

Exterior

The little two-door coupe shows quite nicely. Finished in bright red, the exterior as a whole shows very little damage on the exterior. The rubber seal around the driver’s window is falling out of place. Panel gaps look even aside from some paint chips in between the doors and body. The passenger side front quarter panel show some speckling in the paint up high, and some bubbling down low as well. The exterior would benefit the most if the wheels were polished and if the tires were dressed, but overall, the exterior on this example is certainly solid.

Interior

Draped in tan leather, the interior is in pleasant shape. Most of the leather inside is clean and shows quite nicely; however, there are some areas that deserve attention. The leather-wrapped steering wheel has weathered quite a bit, the vents at the bottom of the center console are dirty, and the floormats are in dire need of some detailing. The vent on the dash pad does appear to be damaged. Tan leather seats also show minor creasing and scuff marks. This interior is solid but has the potential to improve greatly after some touch up work.

Mechanical

The Mistral was the final model from Maserati to have the company’s highly renowned twin-spark dual overhead cam, 3.7-liter straight-six motor. The engine features hemispherical combustion chambers fed by a Lucas indirect fuel injection system. Indirect fuel injection was something that many Italian manufacturers were experimenting with during the 1960s, but Maserati ultimately abandoned the technology. Following the Mistral’s discontinuation, Maserati ultimately moved toward V8 motors to keep up with an satisfy growing customer demands for more power.

History

The seller purchased this car from Hyman Ltd. Classic Cars of St. Louis, Missouri back in 2007. At that time, the car was titled in California, and had 65,579 miles on it. The Mistral has remained on static display in the seller’s care ever since.

Summary

The Maserati Mistral arrived at the very tail end of Maserati’s reign atop the racing world. The snappy 6-cylinder motor had brought the marque great success on the tracks, and now packaged into a civilian vehicle the Mistral was quite an exciting driver’s car back in the day. Everything Maserati had learned while they were out racing is packed into this little two-door. Solid condition both inside and out leave us feeling quite confident that the Italian coupe will have little issue hitting its $40,000 - $60,000 estimate.
