Background

The Land Rover is one of the cars that put British motoring on the global map. It’s known the world over and as a result of minimal style changes over the near 40 years of its production, it is instantly recognisable.

The series 1, 2 and 3 or I, II, III were produced since 1984 and the Land Rover’s immediately made a name for themselves being the only mass produced civilian four-wheel drive vehicle that came with doors and a hard top roof. Due to post war steel shortages and aluminium surplus, the Land Rover was made of non-rusting Aluminium panels which gave the cars their longevity. In 1992 some 8 years later Land Rover claimed that 70% of all vehicles they built were still in use.

The series IIA is widely considered to be the hardiest series model constructed and one that sticks in the mind of the public the most due to lots of appearances in films and TV shows.

Overview

The vehicle in this auction here was bought by the current owner as an addition to the collection, it was a very good car already that the owner has added a few small OEM touches to, to bring it back to its full originality. The Land Rover in questions comes with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certified copy of a factory record which corroborates the authenticity of the vehicle & has been kept under the cover of barns and warehouses in the last two owner’s custodianship and with the previous owner the car was given a new chassis and a complete overhaul of the bodywork and drivetrain by the well respected and reliable Nene Overland. The result is a near new Land Rover Series IIA with all the originality of a mix of restored original parts and OEM replacements, with none of the drawbacks a 58-year-old car might throw up. The reason for sale is due to the loss of storage space, and being the last one in, the Land Rover is unfortunately the first one out, much to the disappointment and reluctance of the current owner. The previous owner had the car in an open-door barn at their holiday home and used the Land Rover very infrequently to make short trips mostly in the dry and always in the daytime, as a result of this the previous owner never used the headlights and didn’t know they didn’t work when the current owner purchased the car. Everything has been given a thorough going over since the current owner has had the car and everything works as intended, there is very little if nothing at all left to do to this Land Rover other than enjoy it.

Exterior

Having had a recent full recommission, the Land Rover is in fantastic shape, the car was dismantled and restored whilst the panels were all stripped back to bare metal, any dents fixed and then painted in the original Land Rover green. Nene Overland completed the restoration of the car, and they have a good reputation in the Land Rover world, so you know the work is complete to a high standard. There is nothing this Land Rover wants for work wise, and the exterior really shows just how high a quality the restoration was completed to.

The Land Rover has a soft top which is a new item purchased for the car by the current owner, it’s a beige fabric item that fits over the rear pickup section with a steel frame, it has a rear plastic window which can be rolled up to give open access to the rear section. Its brand new so has no marks of rips, tears or stains. The tyres are new items as can be seen in the history section below, the wheels have also been given some love to shine them back up again.

Important to note, the electrics around the vehicle are all fully functioning including the lights around the outside of the car. When the current owner purchased the car, the headlights didn’t work, this was due to a faulty bakerlight switch which has been replaced and now the headlights work as intended. The hardtop roof is also in great condition, finished in cream white to correspond to the green body it really is textbook classic Land Rover.

Interior

The inside of the Land Rover is again in wonderful condition with all dials, levers, switches and knobs performing as intended. The previous owner was very conscientious and paid close attention to detail for example, there is a Tipex mark on the Lucas interior fan so that when it’s on, the driver can easily check if the fan is operational. It’s this level of ingenuity that Land Rover is all about and we’re sure the manufacturers would be proud. The current owner has fitted a new foot dim switch for the headlights and at some point in the previous owner’s time with the car, the Land Rover has been given later style seats for comfort. These are the only non-original items on the car but serve a good purpose whilst not looking out of touch with the aesthetic the car is known for.

The rear section is fantastic and has no damage from carrying things that might have taken off the paint or damaged the floor. There is a storage box which can be locked for any items you wish to hide from prying eyes. The bulkhead separating the cab and the rear section is in good condition and continues on from the condition of the rest of the exterior.

Mechanical

A new (possibly galvanised) chassis has been fitted to the Series IIA so it’s absolutely superb, that said before the previous owner came to have the car, there was some surface rust on some sections of the box section. The current owner had the car professionally cleaned underneath, the rust removed, and the entire underside given a coat of clear Waxoyl so that the condition can be admired for many more years.

The engine is the original unit and comes in the desirable 2 1/4L configuration, the engine still requires additive to be used in the fuelling from modern fuel quality so the new owner might want this to be fixed or to keep the originality to keep using the additive. The car does have electronic ignition as a reliability and longevity update and it also has a duel front pulley on the front of the engine for the belts, again as a failsafe should one break. On the note of failsafe’s, there is an electronic cut off switch underneath the dash, again to prevent wannabe thieves from taking a fancy to the Land Rover. The engine has a new alternator and the drivetrain from the engine to the wheels has been refreshed with new driveshafts and shims to prevent any slop or pulling to one side.

History

The Land Rover has had a complete chassis and overall restoration in 2014 and the condition remains to be very good to this day. As expected then, the history file is comprehensive and is summarised below. The car comes with a full clear HPI check and a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certified copy of a factory record which corroborates the authenticity of the vehicle.
