Background

Introduced in 1996 as Jaguar’s answer to the ageing XJS, the XK8’s graceful and restrained lines were penned by chief stylist Geoff Lawson, and were available as either a three-door hatchback coupé, or as a two-door convertible with both models being presented in a 2+2 format.

Under the clamshell bonnet sat a 4.0-litre, 32-valve V8 engine, codenamed the AJ-V8. This was all mightily impressive as it sat, but for real performance enthusiasts, the XK8 never quite hit the mark.

Thankfully, their prayers were answered in 1998, when the ‘big brother’ XKR was introduced. Now, performance Jaguar enthusiasts had something to get excited about. The same 4.0-litre AJ-V8 engine was used up front, but a 2.0-litre Eaton supercharger was bolted on, bolstering the power output to an impressive 370bhp, all of which was sent through the sizeable rear wheels. The XKR has a top speed of 155mph and can shift from 0 to 60mph in 5.2 seconds.

Whilst the power output was a marked change, visual differences between the ‘8’ and the ‘R’ were minimal, being limited to a mesh grille, rear spoiler and a louvred bonnet to improve airflow.

Interestingly, the XKR also received a Mercedes-derived W5A580 transmission, which was upgraded to a ZF six-speed item in 2002, when the XKR and XK8 were face-lifted, and displacement was increased to 4.2 litres.

Overview

This one-owner from new XKR dons a classy specification, matching vibrant Carnival red diamond bright paintwork with luxurious ivory upholstery. It was bought by the vendor’s business partner from new and has done minimal mileage for the last 5 years or so, doing little more in it than keeping it insured and taxed, after the owner decided to go electric.

This model is not a stock vehicle, as it was built to the owner’s specification, fitted with the factory navigation system which sits in place of the three dials in centre console, adaptive cruise control, a security tracker (in case the car got stollen) and reverse park control.

The vendor explained that his business partner bought this car as he had the lifetime ambition of owning a performance sports car. The vendor said the reason he bought is because: “The XKR is basically like getting an Aston Martin DB7, for a lot less money”. This motor was a weekend car, primarily used for trips to see the parents, meaning it has clocked up a rather modest 50,000 miles over its 21 years, with its longest drive being from Weston-Super-Mare to London.

This car is in original condition, with a few rust spots around the bodywork (more on that later) and it has never been in an accident. The owner repaired the sat nav four years ago and it is now fully operational. He also replaced the inner roof lining as the cloth was sagging. The engine runs smoothly and the owner didn’t flag any mechanic issues.

Exterior

The set-back cockpit, the long, elegant body lines and the aggressive - yet restrained - front end, everything about the XKR screams performance GT car.

The paintwork is generally in good order with only notable blemishes on the driver’s side rear wing from arch to rear light and on the rear bumper, slightly lower down. There is a mark on the A-frame on the driver’s side and on the underside of the rear window, as well as some bubbling and discolouration on the windscreen surround.

Elsewhere, the wheels are in good condition (and the tyres come with plenty of tread), the light lenses are all clear and show no signs of any moisture ingress or damage that we could see, which is excellent news for any Jaguar enthusiasts.

Interior

The ivory leather interior is complete with burr walnut inlays, sumptuous trimmings and an air of high-class motoring about the whole thing. Inside, the luxuriously-appointed cabin of this XKR is in great shape, presenting very well for its age and mileage.

The comfortable leather seats remain in great shape, with the driver’s seat having seen the most use but still only showing minor wear and creasing as you’d expect, whilst the passenger seat and rear seats are in even better condition.

Looking around the cabin, the carpets, door cards, glove box, centre console and walnut veneer are in good shape and the headliner is nice and taut throughout. The car also comes with its original first aid kit, spare wheel and toolbox which is a promising sign.

Mechanical

Upon opening the front-hinged clamshell bonnet, the 4.0-litre AJ engine is presented in its full glory, with the 2.0-litre Eaton supercharger happily perched atop the block. Under the bonnet is very clean and everything looks to be in its right and proper place. From what we can see, there are no signs of any major leaks or fluid issues.

The vendor was upfront that there is some rust around the wheel arch edges/seams and there appears to be corrosion to the front wishbone spring mounting plate and floorpan, particularly around the reinforcing plates.

History

This is a one-owner from new motor which comes with its original invoice and service invoices (totalling the best part of £15,000). All services were carried out by Bristol’s approved Jaguar specialists, Hartwell. The car comes with records of MOTs (the most recent is from May 2021) and invoices show that the adaptive cruise control (radar system) was replaced back in 2011 for the best part of £2k.

Summary

Ideal for long-distance, cross-continental travel or simply for a short jaunt down to the beach or pub, this 2001 Jaguar XKR has aged well, and has clearly benefitted from considerate and fastidious ownership over the years.

Though in overall good condition for its age, there is scope to make minor aesthetic improvements. This 4.0-litre, supercharged V8-powered GT car would be a top daily driver or second car for the distinguished driver who enjoys performance, practicality and style, all wrapped up in one comfortable package.

This car was £58,000 new and it is unquestionably a lot of car for the money. To take this car away, we expect a prospective buyer to part with somewhere between £7,000 and £11,000 when the hammer falls.
