Background

The XJ-S faced an incredibly tough path to victory, conceived as it was during a time of great corporate instability, and intended as it was to replace a model even the curmudgeonly Enzo Ferrari called “the prettiest car ever made.”

Succeed it did however, with greater than 125,000 built over a 22-year run, during which it remained a hotly desired symbol of taste and wealth throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, ensuring Jaguar’s survival into the 21st century.

Overview

The auction car is particularly noteworthy for its final model year, low mileage, and spec.

One of a limited number of final-year Celebration Edition XJS built in honor of Jaguar’s 60th anniversary, the car features diamond-turned wheels, a partial wood steering wheel, leaping cats embossed on the headrests, and a special hood ornament that are all unique to Celebration Edition cars.

Currently displaying fewer than 45,000 miles, the car appears to be well preserved throughout, and also nearly entirely stock excluding currently-fitted aftermarket wheels–for those interested in a fully factory look, original items are also included.

Exterior

The car’s white and cashmere color combination is a classic 1990s luxury vibe, and aftermarket chrome wheels are very much of the period as well. Special diamond-turned Celebration Edition factory wheels are included as well.

Interior

The cabin presents just as well, excluding a bit of expected wear on the driver’s outer seat bolster. Woods, hides, and other materials are all of a noticeably high quality, and sale includes the original boot cover for concealing the folded convertible top when in the down position.

Note the partial wood steering wheel, two-tone, piped leather upholstery, and leaping cat Jaguar logos on the headrests, all of which are specific to the Celebration Edition XJS.

Mechanical

Power is from a twin-cam, 24-valve Jaguar AJ6 straight-six displacing 4.0 liters and factory rated at 237 hp and 282 lb-ft. Smooth, flexible, torquey, and great sounding (in a suitably muted manner, of course), these engines would also serve under the hood of Aston Martin’s XJS-adjacent DB7 in supercharged. 3.2 liter form.

History

This car is sold with limited documented history.

Summary

As some of the last pre-Ford developed Jaguars, late XJS coupes and convertibles are shot-through with a type of character and charm that just aren’t seen in modern, market homogenized luxury vehicles. This one’s mileage and condition are quite special.

Estimated $15,000 - $25,000.
