Background

Launched as a full-spectrum, three-model range from the very beginning, the Jaguar MK2’s independent front suspension and trailing arm suspension at the rear offered sparkling handling, while all-wheel disc brakes meant that it stopped as impressively as it accelerated.

The more performance-oriented customer was able to choose between 3.4-litre and 3.8-litre engines offering 210bhp and 220bhp respectively.

These were very impressive figures for the day and the MK2 soon earned a reputation for providing drivers with more power and pace than almost anything else in its class.

The MK2 had an enviable competition history and was raced very successfully in period by track and rally circuit luminaries such as Denny Hulme, Roy Salvadori, Duncan Hamilton, Bernard Consten and Peter Lindner.

The 3.8-litre MK2 was always the more desirable of the MK2 models, especially when specified with wire wheels and a manual gearbox with the ‘Laycock de Normanville’ overdrive system.

Chassis No: P202899BW

Engine No: LA9696-8

Odometer Reading: 01,128 kms.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this very fine LHD 1960 Jaguar MK2 3.8 manual is an exceptional example of an iconic British classic.

It is in very good overall condition and would appear to have had only limited use since its restoration.

We know very little about this car, apart from the following:

  • it was originally RHD.
  • it was originally supplied with an automatic gearbox.
  • it had a 3.8 litre engine from new.

We think it was painted in its current colour of Jaguar Racing Green in September 2001.

We believe the engine was rebuilt or replaced and the car restored (perhaps at the same time as the RHD/LHD and auto/manual conversion) by Technik Garage of Aachen (TGA), Germany.

The cam covers are stamped with the TGA initials and there is a TGA plaque inside the ashtray.

We know that it entered the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2013.

Exterior

The Jaguar Racing Green paintwork is in excellent condition all round.

The bodywork is free of any dents, bumps or creases that we can see.

The wire wheels are also good all round, as are the chrome fixtures and fittings.

The panel gaps and shut lines are consistent, and the lights and badging are as they should be.

The rubber trim and seals have perished, cracked or fallen away in many places and are the most obvious aesthetic flaw on an exterior that is otherwise of a very high standard.

Interior

The good news continues on the inside, where the grey upholstery and carpets make for a pleasantly light and airy space.

The front seats have some light creasing but are not damaged in any way. They are supportive, comfortable and fully functional.

Their counterparts in the rear are in even better condition.

The carpets and mats are very good, although they need cleaning on the driver’s footwell side

The magnificent wood and veneers are rich and glossy, with a lovely patina and no damage to speak of.

The picnic table behind the driver’s seat doesn’t stay in the closed, upright position.

Some of the interior trim around the doors is a little loose and baggy.

The door cards, headlining, Moto-Lita steering wheel, gear lever and instrument cluster are all in fine condition.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start the vehicle.

The boot is as clean and tidy as the rest of this car. Lifting up the carpets here or elsewhere reveals nothing to worry about at all as far as we can see.

Mechanical

Everything looks impressively good and honest to us. The car’s restoration clearly extended to many of the visible components on the car’s undersides.

There is the usual amount of rust dust and a tiny spot of flaking here and there but, overall, we think this vehicle is structurally sound.

Obviously, you’ll want to see for yourself and make your own judgement.

Everything we can see in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and appears to be clean and dry.

History

The car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

Any paperwork we have is photographed and displayed in the photo gallery. We do not have anything else.

Summary

Apart from one or two very minor cosmetic issues, this car is in remarkable condition and appears to have been well looked after and preserved since being restored.

Having been converted from RHD to LHD and from auto to manual, the car is far from original.

That said, all of the restorative work seems to have been done to an excellent standard and we’re of the opinion that this is a highly desirable, high-quality example.

Provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals are as good as the rest of it.
