Background

The Jaguar Mark X served as Jaguar’s flagship saloon car from 1961 to 1970. It began its life as the Mark X before being renamed to the 420G during a refresh and was built primarily to serve the United States market. Jaguar hoped the vehicle would appeal to heads of state, diplomats, and movie stars thanks to a number of engineering improvements geared towards making the vehicle a luxury success.

Overview

The Mark X received unitary bodywork and independent rear suspension. The car also received the engine from the E-Type, as both cars were announced simultaneously. All these advancements together gave the Mark X an impressive top speed and fantastic handling for less than half the price of the competing Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.

Exterior

The metallic silver exterior to this Mark X just feels right. British Racing Green aside, this light silver feels like the only color the Mark X should have been painted. Although the paint looks wonderful, there are some imperfections that need to be pointed out. First up, there is a large dent and several scrapes on the driver’s front quarter panel. Even if a paintless dent removal expert can fix the panel, the surrounding scrapes will need to be repainted. Continuing on, there is a very minor amount of bubbling occurring at the bottom of the driver’s door as well as the door behind it. The passenger door has bubbling and its own small dent as well, but again, in the grand scheme of things the damage appears to be very minor. Chrome around the car is in nice condition showing very little in the way of dents or wrinkles, and all glass seems to be clear as well showing no chips or cracks. There is a Jaguar badge missing from the top of the grille. All four hubcaps have at least one scuff mark, but there is no major damage to be seen and a hefty scrubbing will likely return the wheels to great condition. The tires appear to have some tread left on them, but we always recommend a new set. Panel fitment is decent with no major red flags. Overall, this Jaguar has an exterior with some blemishes, but even with them the exterior should still be considered in decent condition.

Interior

Light silver paired with red leather is quite simply one of the best exterior/interior combinations a vehicle can have. Sure enough, a look inside the cabin reveals a rich red leather interior complemented by a host of wooden inlays to please the eye. The front seats do show moderate signs of creasing, but they have not yet caused real damage to the leather. However, the some of the stitching is failing atop the driver’s seat which could lead to bigger issues with the material if left alone to decay. The rear bench actually shows heavier creasing than the front seats, but it does not appear to have created any holes or tears – yet. The cloth beneath the rear windshield and behind the rear bench is starting to wrinkle. Floormats were added to protect the original carpets. The condition of the original carpets is unclear, but the protective mats are rather unsightly, and the winning bidder should consider replacing them in order to make the interior a more pleasant space to pass the time. The door panels are in fair condition at best as most of the red leather attached to each panel is sagging in one way or another. All of the wooden inlays in the car are either discolored, scratched, chipped, or a combination of all three. Not a single piece in the car appears to have made it unscathed, and we would wager that some of the discoloration observed in the wood might have come from excess moisture. That being said, the dashboard is clean and all of the gauges within it are clear and easily readable. The natural-colored headliner does have a few stains, but it appears to be hanging tightly in place along with the sunshades. Overall, this Mark X has a solid interior and if some rehabilitation efforts are spent inside then the quality could quickly rise to the next level with minimal labor necessary.

Mechanical

We are pleased to report that the underside of this Mark X harbors no major damage, the frame and floorboards are solid, suspension components are all in order, and the exhaust shows minimal discoloration. Under the hood, everything appears to be in order, and all the components appear to be in their proper locations.

History

This Jag’s history is vague, but we do know that the seller likely took ownership of the vehicle sometime around November of 2011.

Summary

Overall, we believe this Mark X to be a solid vehicle. The exterior has its bubbling issues, but thanks to the undercarriage photos we can see that the bubbling has not affected any of the vehicle’s underlying architecture. The interior is fair and the winner, should they decide to keep the car as a driver, will not need to do much work inside the car. The Jaguar Mark X is a handsome stately vehicle, and today’s example has plenty of stage presence with its gorgeous silver exterior and red interior. Decent condition from top to bottom aside from the bubbling make this car a fantastic driver or an easy project, making us confident that this Mark X will have no problem finding a new home with its $10,000 - $20,000 estimate.
