Background

The Jaguar Mark X served as Jaguar’s flagship saloon car from 1961 to 1970. It began its life as the Mark X before being renamed to the 420G during a refresh and was built primarily to serve the United States market. Jaguar hoped the vehicle would appeal to heads of state, diplomats, and movie stars thanks to a number of engineering improvements geared towards making the vehicle a luxury success.

Overview

The Mark X received unitary bodywork and independent rear suspension. The car also received the engine from the E-Type, as both cars were announced simultaneously. All of these advancements together gave the Mark X an impressive top speed and fantastic handling for less than half the price of the competing Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.

Exterior

This Mark X is metallic light silver. While the paint looks incredible, there are a few flawed areas. There is a small paint bubble behind the driver’s front wheel, several chips at the bottom of the driver’s door, and two chips at the driver’s rear quarter panel. There are multiple chips in both doors on the passenger side, a large crack beneath the front passenger door, and both the clearcoat and actual paint are failing on the trunk and the roof. The windshield has a small chip in it that will likely need attention at some point. The exterior has its fair share of bumps and bruises, but this paint is beautiful and well deserving of some much-needed TLC.

Interior

The interior to this Mark X is black leather with plenty of wooden inlays. The front seats have no holes or tears, but they have a moderate level of creasing. The footwell for both driver and passenger are clean, the carpets fit into their respective positions with no issues. The wooden dashboard is clean, but at both edges, the wood is slightly deteriorated. The sun shades up front have left some adhesive on the headliner, but other than that the headliner is clean and tight. The backseat is not much different than the front. The rear bench shows a modest amount of creasing but there are again no holes or tears to be seen. Some of the wood trim in front of the rear seats could use a sanding and repolishing, but the fold-out trays appear to be in good condition. The wooden trim on each of the doors are in good shape and there are no chips present. This interior needs a bit of freshening up, but it will not be necessary to move mountains to get the inside back to good condition.

Mechanical

We are happy to report that the underside of this Mark X is clean. It would benefit from a power washing, but all the components appear to be intact. The exhaust shows some slight discoloration but gets progressively cleaner towards the back. The suspension is particularly tidy at the rear, thought the front raises no red flags either.

History

The car was originally shipped to San Francisco in 1966, and then to the first owner in Seattle likely that same year. The car spent a lot of its time in Seattle. During that time, it received a repaint and an engine rebuild in 1992, where the cooling and braking systems, exhaust, ignition, and instruments were all either rebuilt or replaced. This Mark X was previously auctioned by Bonhams in 2009 and is believed to have been bought by the seller. https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/17333/lot/410/

Summary

The Jaguar Mark X is a wonderful luxury car from the 1960s that never found a major audience. Its handsome styling, great shape, and smooth interior make it an excellent choice especially when compared alongside competing Rolls-Royce’s from the same era. This specific example has a handful of chips on the outside and some areas to address inside as well, but it won’t take much to turn back the clock and make this Jag the showstopper it used to be. The Mark X may be somewhat obscure, but any avid Jaguar fans should certainly keep an eye on this car.

The Market by Bonhams is excited to offer this Mark X for online auction with no reserve, and an estimate between $10,000 and $20,000.

It should be noted that this vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and there is no history available beyond that displayed in our photography section.

We have not started or driven the car so cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

Please note that the title for this vehicle is in transit.
