Background

Everyone knows the name ‘Mustang’. It instantly conjures up visions of American muscle cars and perhaps the famous Steve McQueen car chase in the movie Bullitt. It has as much to do with American history as the Gold Rush or Wyatt Earp. It has stood the test of time and has received something of a renaissance in recent years and even today’s versions remain the familiar front engine, rear wheel drive leviathans.

The 5th generation models made between 2004 and 2014 are regarded by many to be some of the last more visceral versions before becoming somewhat tamed by modern expectations.

Overview

This is a 2013 GT Convertible which possesses all the features you’d come to expect from an iconic American muscle car. There’s a hefty 5 litre 32 valve engine which forces more than 400 horses through a manual gearbox. Yes, a stick shift as our American cousins like to say that’ll give a much more ‘involved’ drive. All that power goes straight to the rear wheels just as it did on the first Mustang way back then.

It was imported new by Atlantic Sports Ltd, for a client who ordered almost every conceivable upgrade available.

Exterior

The 5th generation of the Mustang regained many of the design cues of the original cars of the 60s that the designers had turned away from to draw something fresh and new. However, the car buyers of the Millenium were a reflective bunch and liked to see the tell-tale designs of earlier icons resurface. So, in 2004 the new model was to feature a more familiar profile along with the hooded brow to the front and the kicked-up rear with vertical taillights.

The one you see before you here has the traditional Race Red with a broad black stripe bodywork. It is both clean and unmarked and has little signs of use. The 19inch alloys are in fabulous condition and appear to free from any kerb damage. The decision to dry store the car under a cloth cover along with minimal use has kept the car in what can only be described as lovely condition.

Interior

US cars are known for covering great distances, usually in a straight line, so comfort is something that becomes second nature to them. So, the seating of this GT Mustang is in a rather traditional guise of black leather. There is little to no signs of use to the seats and there are no scuffs to the driver’s seat bolster. The rear seats appear very clean and may never have been used.

The dash layout also has had a long look at the past as the main dials for speed and RPM are large and round behind conical plastic. The dash remains uncluttered with a simple centre console containing AC, stereo and Sat Nav controls and the leather clad steering wheel, which is also free of obvious wear, contains plenty of controls. The bright red gear knob also gives a hint to the past and serves to advertise that it is a manual.

The roof is electrically powered, but still needs to be locked or unlocked from the top of the windscreen by hand.

Mechanical

The muscle mentioned in the term Muscle Car is derived in this case from a sublime modular 5 litre V8. It has twin cams, 32 valves and has variable valve timing and generates a more than healthy 420bhp.

The first owner embellished the engine with plenty of Roush motifs and has added a performance cold intake air-filter system. The power gets pushed through a 6 speed Getrag manual gearbox and the 2013 GT model also came with a better braking package from Brembo with the convertible receiving has a stiffer crossmember and an upper front strut brace giving better rigidity over previous convertibles.

The 19inch alloys are unique to the GT Convertible and are wearing a matching set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Tyres.

History

The car was imported from new and there is an original order form shown within the advert. It was then sold to an elderly gentleman in 2018 who was used to driving Caterham’s for pleasure. Even with the road skills to enjoy a Caterham, he found the Mustang too powerful for him and sold it to the current owner.

The present custodian of the car bought it with a mere 3200 miles on the clock and has used it sparingly since. It has spent the last few years at his home in Spain but has been brought to his UK residence to sell to slim down his extensive car collection.

There’s a recent MOT certificate valid until April 2024 and also a recent service invoice dated just July of this year.

Summary

Ford Mustangs are becoming more popular here in the UK, particularly with the advent of the recent generations being supplied right hand drive. However, many purists not only insist that for it to be a proper Mustang it must be left handed, but there is something of a preference to the slightly earlier 5th generation incarnation. These are deemed by many to hang on to the original Mustang ethos and favourable comparisons can be drawn to those original cars.

This is one of those sought after machines and looks stunning in its Race Red and black livery. It has enjoyed a life that has been low on driven miles and has been stored carefully when not in use. It is freshly serviced and ready to be enjoyed. So, for those that prefer a more hands on approach to driving a 420 hp low flying machine with a manual gearbox should consider taking a closer look at a proper modern Mustang. Flying lessons not included in the price by the way.
