The Ford Escort RS Cosworth is to Ford what the Delta Evoluzione was to Lancia and the 205 T16 to Peugeot: the extreme roadgoing version of the brand’s rally car, produced in very limited numbers as homologation specials for the broad public. Their aggressive, almost comically wide, and extravagant bodywork features, paired to state-of-the art period technology makes these cars extremely desirable among discerning collectors.
The Escort RS Cosworth was based on the fifth Escort generation and designed to qualify as a Group A car for the World Rally Championship. The car competed in this category from 1993 to 1998, and although it did not win a World Championship title, the Escort did manage to win eight events as a Group A car until 1996 and two further races in World Rally Car guise in 1997 and 1998. The vehicles featured a clever and permanent four-wheel drive system that sent 34% of the power to the front while 66% were available on the rear wheels. The drivetrain was connected to a five-speed manual gearbox. Power came from Ford’s two-liter in-line four-cylinder YBT engine that produced 227hp in its standard trim. The unit is known to be very robust and easily tunable with some tuning companies achieving power outputs of 1,000hp. The interior of the Cosworth featured the magnificent Recaro sports seats that give the necessary side support when you are putting that four-wheel drive to use…
Two road-going versions of the Escort Cosworth, commonly referred to as “Cossies” among enthusiasts, were available: 2,500 cars were built until the end of 1992 as homologation specials and are known as the first edition cars. They have a variety of features that were directly derived from the rally cars, but that are mostly useless for normal street use, the main being an oversized Garrett T3/T04B Hybrid turbo and air/water intercooler. These units had significant turbo lag due to important inertia and the detuned nature of their competition derived engine. The first series cars also came with a water injection system mounted under the rear passenger seat.
A total of 2500 Escort RS Cosworth cars were produced as First Series.
