Background

The much-loved Ford Capri. It remains as popular as ever as some of us oldies try to relive our youth. Perhaps a tad unaffordable back in the day, or maybe a family car was a necessity, so the sensible Cortina it was.

Star of many a TV show, the Capri was usually driven by a good-looking chap. Who could forget Minder, starring George Cole and Dennis Waterman? Old Terry McCann knocked around in a white Mk 1 Capri, running errands for good old Arthur. Sadly, that particular car recently caught fire, but no doubt it will rise again from the Ashes.

Another favourite was The Professionals, with Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw. Most of the show seemed to be spent with them power sliding their RS2000 or cool Capri, whilst helping to track down the bad guys.

Both programmes must have increased the car’s popularity immensely.

One of the Capri’s strengths was its many versions. It was possible to get those rakish coupe looks, but with a miniscule 1.3-litre engine. Definitely a case of all show and no go!

At the other end of the performance scale was the 3.0-litre V6, which latterly morphed in to the rather special 2.8i.

A testament to the car’s popularity was a production run from 1968 to 1986 and during that time some 1.9 million were sold.

By the mid-eighties, the hot hatch was now king, and the Capri sadly disappeared from sale. Did the Escort XR3i really cut the mustard? For a start power was fed to the front wheels, so no professional- style slip sliding shenanigans were possible.

Overview

We are delighted to be offering for sale a 1970 Capri 1600GT. Our seller is something of a Capri expert, having restored very many of these cool coupes over the years.

He stumbled upon the car in 2015, attracted to it not by its condition, but by the 2.0-litre V4 engine which lurked under the bonnet, wanted for another project. The car itself was in a very poor state and initial thoughts were to scrap it after removing the motor.

However, a solid shell convinced him that this was a car worth saving and thus began a two year full rebuild. Many of the parts needed were already in stock, and for the rest, our seller knew where to source the best bits.

The plan was to restore the car to as original condition as possible, so a 1,600cc Crossflow engine was fitted.

The work was completed by late 2016 and the Capri passed its first MoT in many years in the following January, with no advisories.

Since then, the car has remained in storage, covering less than 100 miles. We are told it drives well and boy, it certainly looks the part.

So, if an early Capri is your thing, we suggest you read on and find out more and better still, pay us a visit and take a look. We think you will be impressed.

Exterior

Our talented seller resprayed the Capri and you can tell he is experienced in the art, as the bronze paintwork looks lovely. It helps of course that the car has been garaged and more or less unused since the rebuild was completed. We can find little to criticise and much to praise.

The vinyl roof has of course been replaced and it adds to the charm of this seventy’s classic car. It also means there is less bodywork to polish.

Chrome has either been replaced or redone and all sparkles. We note one small chrome trim piece has detached itself on the nearside rear wing, but it is with the car and just wants properly reinstating.

The car sports wire wheel trims by Mangels and we note the offside rear is a little loose. Nexen tyres are fitted all round, and these are as new with plenty of tread.

Interior

A sea of brown! How very trendy, as finally this shade has now made a long overdue comeback on modern cars. It contrasts nicely with the Capri’s bronze paintwork and is far more interesting that the usual dark and dreary black.

The seats are in remarkably good condition. The front seats recline, the rear perches boast a central pull-down armrest – such luxury!

Carpets are all in great order, just a little dusty in places.

The headlining tones in nicely, though we do note some ruckling and small tears around the edge in places.

We have also spotted some light corrosion to the inside of the driver’s door window and the paintwork in the door shuts has some marks in places.

Ahead of the driver is a familiar Ford dashboard, with a raft of instruments. The rev counter currently doesn’t work.

The boot is a decent size and in good order apart from a little rust in the spare wheel well.

Mechanical

We always include a selection of photographs of the car’s underside, so take a look we say. Wipe away the dirt and we think the car will defy its 52 years.

Our seller reports the chassis was sound and relatively rust free when he purchased the car, and he seems to have done a good job in protecting it all with a careful application of underseal. Apart from a little road dirt, it all looks spick and span.

You will be able to admire the new suspension system and exhaust.

An original Ford Crossflow engine has been reinstated and we are told runs well. Its mileage is unknown. Mated to a four-speed gearbox, this Capri we are told drives well and has more than enough power to keep up with modern day traffic and have some fun.

The engine bay was completely repainted before the engine was fitted, so all tones in nicely. New parts abound, so feast your eyes on the pictures in our gallery.

We have noticed a small oil leak, so this will want investigating in due course.

History

Sadly, we have very little paperwork with the car so can tell you nothing about it before it fell into the capable hands of our seller.

He first MoTed the car in 2017, the odometer then reading 87,312 miles. The last test was carried out on 8th February 2022, the car passing with one minor advisory for an insecure battery. Mileage up just a tad to 87,378. We have no idea of the actual miles the car has travelled in its lifetime.

We can tell you that our talented seller has completely rebuilt the car and whilst there are no receipts available, the raft of new parts is there for all to see.

The registration document lists the cc of the car as 1996, which is now not the case with a 1600cc engine now reinstalled. Contact the DVLA if it bothers.

Summary

Early Capris in good condition are as rare as hens’ teeth! And this one is in great condition.

Fresh from its comprehensive rebuild, this lovely Capri is now ready for exciting new adventures.

The price for all this Ford coupe loveliness? Well, we think the car will sell for between £12,000 and £18,000 pounds. Get bidding right away.
