Background

One of the most instantly-recognisable cars on the planet, these diminutive little classics won the heart of millions of drivers around the world, with over 3.8 million 500s being built in their various trims and guises between 1957 and 1975.

The early cars were very simple in their nature, with the aim of keeping costs low and accessibility high. Powered by a 499cc air-cooled two-cylinder engine, the Fiat 500 is often cited as the first successful purpose-built city car.

Such was the success of the Fiat 500 that it spawned all manner of variants. From the sports-focused Abarth models to the stretched-out ‘Giardiniera’ estates, the 500 sits up with the likes of the VW Beetle and Austin Mini as one of the true icons of automotive history.

Overview

This 1972 LHD manual Fiat 500 F has been professionally restored to a high standard and is in excellent condition outside and inside.

The chassis number is 110F3016781.

The odometer reads 77,711 kms.

The car comes with no history or service records beyond whatever documentation is shown in the gallery.

The vendor, a classic car specialist, has the following to say about this car.

“Completely restored in terms of bodywork and paintwork as well as mechanically, and therefore in top condition. Beautiful fresh combination of white paint with red interior trim, white wall tires and a chrome luggage rack on the back, all details are correct. The engine features an electric fuel pump and electronic ignition, ensuring reliable starting and driving in all conditions.”

Exterior

This pretty car looks very good both outside and inside.

It has clearly been restored to a high standard and looks as good as new in most respects.

The car’s white paintwork has plenty of lustre and shine to it.

The bodywork is free of any dinks, dents or creases of any note that we can see.

The panel gaps and shut lines are fairly consistent and even. Or at least as consistent and even as they would have been when the car was new in 1972.

The chrome work is very good everywhere, as is the exterior trim.

The black fabric roof appears to be in fine order and fully functional.

The lights, lenses and badging all seem to be in good order.

All five wheels and tyres are excellent.

There are a few black marks and scuffs on the engine cover louvres.

There is also a small crack in the paint on the bodywork just ahead of the wing mirror on the driver’s side.

The edges of the sills below the chrome strip on both sides look a little ragged and scruffy in places.

Interior

The good news continues on the inside, where the simple but stylish interior is more or less pristine.

The red and white vinyl upholstery looks very smart indeed, both front and back.

The red door cards are in good order, as are the black carpets and mats.

The white painted dashboard is practically showroom-fresh and, as far as we’re aware, all knobs, switches, dials, levers and instruments do what they’re supposed to do.

The headlining and all interior trim look good.

Mechanical

The engine and engine bay are clean, dry and everything appears to be in its right and proper place.

History

The car doesn’t come with any service records, history or documentation beyond what is shown in the gallery section.

Summary

We think that this properly restored and cared for Fiat 500 F is a charming and high-quality example of an iconic model.

We confidently offer this delightful car for auction with an estimate of between €8,000 - €12,000.
