“ Legendary Italian - Recent Service ”

This fabulous, low-mileage Ducati Monster M900 is original, totally unmodified mechanically, and has very few indicators of use, wear or tear anywhere that we can see.

It has clearly been very well looked-after throughout its notably sedentary existence and is a particularly fine example of a legendary marque and model.

We’re confident to offer this fine motorcycle for auction with an estimate of £4,000 - £6,000.

Background

Long lauded for their racing credentials and status as creators of some of the world’s most coveted superbikes, Ducati were nonetheless in some financial trouble in the early 90s, largely as a consequence of not having an offering that both caught the bike-riding public’s imagination and didn’t threaten to completely drain its wallet.

Step forward Ducati Technical Director Massimo Bordi and designer Miguel Angel Galluzzi.

The broad brief was to create something that had Ducati DNA running through it like a stick of rock but was a stylish, urban ‘streetfighter’ of a bike, not a track-focussed sports weapon.

When Bordi first saw Galluzzi’s ‘naked’ design with its tubular steel trellis frame and 90° V-twin engine, he remarked that this was undoubtedly the bike a modern Marlon Brando would choose to ride should anyone decide to remake the iconic 1953 film, ‘The Wild One’.

When asked what inspired the naked, functional design of Il Mostro, Galluzzi’s somewhat Delphic reply was, “All you need is a seat, tank, engine, two wheels and handlebar.”

Fair enough.

It looked like nothing that came before it and, such was its enduring influence and success, it looked a great deal like most things that came after it.

The first M900 was shipped in 1993, with the M600 arriving in 1994, followed by the M750 in 1996.

Overview

There have been countless iterations of ‘Il Mostro’ over the past 30 years.

Big ones, small ones, tall ones, low ones, slow ones, quick ones and bonkers-fast ones.

But this one has the rare and very real distinction of being an authentic, original, low-mileage, collection-quality first one.

Initially UK registered on 31.8.93 and delivered brand-new on 10.9.93, this early M900 Monster has led something of a pampered life, much of it spent in the warm and dry surroundings of an extensive private collection.

L900 RAA has covered just 16,641 miles since 1993 and its condition is really very impressive indeed - even for that low mileage, let alone its age.

As an indication of the sparing use this bike has had, consider the fact that, on the occasion of its 2005 MoT, it had covered 11,155 miles.

We have ridden the bike and can report that it is impressively solid, strong and powerful, it makes the pure-bred Ducati V-twin sound you’ll be wanting to hear, and it’s reassuringly free of any squeaks, rattles, wobbles or other aberrations.

It just needs using.

Exterior

This really is a stunning-looking machine.

The condition of the bodywork is very good indeed and far better than anyone has any right to expect or demand from a 30-year-old bike.

There are no dinks, dents or creases of any significance whatsoever.

Everything is shiny and bright, from the carbon-fibre crank case covers to the belly pan, which has done its job of protecting the bike’s sensitive under-carriage diligently and effectively.

The wheels are good, as are all visible frame, suspension, and braking components.

Interior

The red paint on the tank is properly lustrous and radiant.

The seat is in fine fettle, as are the various carbon-fibre inserts on the bike.

The instrument dial is clear and free from any damage.

As far as we’re aware, all knobs, buttons, levers and toggles do what they’re supposed to do.

If you look very closely, you’ll notice the odd stone chip here are there on the tank and the pillion cover, most of which have been successfully touched-up and almost defy discovery.

Some paint has worn off the brake fluid reservoirs.

Mechanical

Everything looks straight, clean, dry, right and proper.

Aside from one of two scuffs and scratches here are there, the undersides of the bike are entirely commensurate with what you’d hope to find on a bike that’s covered so few miles.

History

This vehicle comes with a service book containing the following service stamps.

· 5.8.94 – 821 miles

· 29.6.95 – 1,805 miles

· 11.4.96 – 4,700 miles

· 11.5.16 – 15,625 miles

It was recently fully recommissioned and serviced by specialist workshop Koti Auto Talli at a cost of nearly £1,000.

The work included, but wasn’t limited to, a belt change, Mikuni carburettor rebuild and ultra-sonic clean, the sourcing and fitting of a new factory airbox, carburettor set up and road test.

The bike has done virtually no miles since its last service in 2023.

It has been professionally fully detailed.

The bike doesn’t currently have an MoT certificate.
